Default Reef Runner Cicada - Change out Hooks?

Hey all. As an avid fisherman, I am always looking to experiment.

Walleye action has really exploded this year, and jigs are fun and everything but I've been experimenting with different lures / presentations simply to mix it up a bit.

I was reading something saying the larger the "thump" or vibration your lure puts off, the bigger the walleye you catch with it.

I've had a ton of fun playing around with these reef runner cicada's. They work like a charm, and are very versatile lures.

My only issue with them is I find the pair of two-prong trebles that come with the lure don't hook into Walleyes mouths very well. I get an insane amount of bites using the lure, but my hookup ratio is mediocre at best.

What kind of hooks would you suggest I change out the standard hooks with? I use the 3/8 oz size Cicada for reference. maybe some small size #4 trebles? I just don't want to interrupt the action of the lure because it definitely brings fish in. Maybe I could try dunking it in gulp juice or some other spray-able scent to hopefully convince them to clamp down for that extra half second while I set the hook? Anyone else have problems hooking up with them?

Thanks in advance for any replies

-Ben

I have a couple in my box and have had zero success with them to date, so you're already doing better than me!

The trick is to follow your rod tip down to keep your line tight after you jig upwards. 90% of my bites come on the fall or right after it settles.

They sink really slowly because of their shape so your really gotta follow your tip down to keep pace with the lure as it sinks, it takes a bit of patience but you'll be shocked how many taps / tugs you feel as it flutters back to the bottom.

Yeah switch out the hooks for trebles and you'll be better off. About the same size as the double hook. Doesn't mess with action but may foul more. So sometimes avoid that by only using a front treble.

Thanks for the advice. What brand of trebles do you prefer btw?

I've found the matzuo sickle trebles work pretty well. Not a bad price and can get a pack with all different sizes.

Default LET ME calle

I have been using these for years. We always swapped out the hooks for a small treble. The hooks they come with are horrible. It is the only draw back to them. I have caught whalleye, bass, pike and trout on them.

Do you guys only jig the Cicada's or do you cast & retrieve them too? What about trolling?

I do both and have quite the cicada video collection if anyone cares to get on the cicada bite these may help. Used to be my go to lure before I met the Slender Spoon.

One of my most watched underwater perch videos on cicada... makes me absolutely sick to see how many perch were in this lake only 4 years ago and now I haven't caught one in over a year. Complete and utter destruction by Walleye Over Predation. Pathetically Poor Fisheries Management.
