Ultimately it depends how thick the timber is. With timber that isn't thick I use light weight tikka in 6.5x55.
But when it's thick I go for my Marlin 1895 SBL with a
Guide scope. I load up some 325 gr GTX with reloader 7. Great power horse round for sub 200 meters.

These are good videos on bush guns. It doesn't take much to affect a bullet. It is shown on a extreme but still interesting.

I know must people hunt cut lines and clearings but in bush and that's what the thread is about I would go with 45-70.

Pre-64 Winchester 94 rebored to .35-30/30 with Williams sight. Very accurate with 200 gr. handloads at 100-125 yards. Willing to sell if any interest.

[QUOTE=MK2750;3656187]And everyone else that understands the laws of physics. Many tests have been done shooting small fast bullets as opposed to large slow ones and both were virtually equal when it come to deflecting off of sticks. You are far better off avoiding them completely.

A good man on a bolt gun can shoot follow up shots every bit as fast as a lever or pump guy if accuracy is taken into account. What takes the time is getting on target after recoil not cycling the gun.

The advantage of a bush gun (if any) is going through real bush where you can barely squeeze through yourself let alone drag a pack of a rifle. There is very little jungle type bush in Alberta and very few would hunt it anyway. What people call bush in Alberta we use to call a clearing back in N. S

Is there some physics involved here ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5dve7vAY9I Nobody advocates shooting through a brush pile, but it appears that a heavier, slower bullet resists deflection better than a lighter faster bullet.

Default ultimate bush gun

My dad bought a winchester model 94 in .307 caliber. Nice gun!! Most people have never heard of a .307. Basically a snub nose .308 Open sights.

have two choices , maybe 3 . My 243 sps stainless , my model 70 308 , or the old Enfield . Leaning towards the 308 but the my 7mm has downed all my big game except one . the 26 inch barrel is a pain though in the brush

Two Winchester levers being the Model 94 BB 307 XTR and the Model 71 Deluxe 348 both with peep sights have been putting meat on the table for years and will continue to do so for years to come. Almost all shots at less than 100 in the thick stuff on the trapline.

I do not generally hunt cutlines, and clearings, or even man made trails if I can help it. Unless conditions are truly terrible open areas generally play into my strategy more as negative terrain, a feature that funnels game movement rather than attracts game. You will often catch me hunting around clearings, but rarely hunting the actual clearing. I do hunt river bottoms quite a bit until I get some snow on the ground though (I preffer hunting where I can accuratly gauge the freshness of the tracks) and they can offer longer shots in the old channels and snys... but generally no, this thread isn't really about hunting cutlines and clearings.

Having tried quite a few types of rifles I've developed a preference for bolt guns, having tried quite a few sighting systems I've developed a preference for low powered scopes on most days, and not being a re-loader I like cartridges that are widely available and fairly affordable. Within these parameters, I think the Husky carbine in 30-06 that I ended up getting is a pretty good bush gun.

On days where it is difficult to keep snow or rain out of the scope I use my old Lee Enfield. Got to always remind my thumb that the safety is on the opposite side of the bolt from what I'm used to though, which is not exactly ideal when bush hunting. One of these days I'm sure it will cost me a shot opportunity.

I bought my oldest daughter a Browning Micro Midas chambered in 7-08. This is my new favorite gun for walking big bush.

I use a model 7 Remington chambered in 300saum
its short light weight and packs a heck of a punch
in thick heavy bush or open fields its usually my go to rifle
I also have for heavy bush a BLR chambered in 358
topped with a Williams peep sight
but it gets more safe or gun case time then my model 7

I did prefer the Remington 700 Classic in 350 Rem Mag as the 22" barrel allowed me to get 3800+ fps with the 225 sierra BT and 2700 fps with a Nosler Partition. This made it great for close shots in the bush, with the LeupoldVX III 1.5-5 scope, but also good to over 400 yards on moose or elk.
With the slim profile barrel and the .35 bore it doubled as a reasonably lite mountain rifle and I used it to harvest a Sheep. I did not get a chance to shoot a grizzly with it but did not feel under gunned with the Nosler Partition at 2700 fps.
As originally set up before the Leupold scope :

Ruger M77 in 338 RCM. Great little bush gun, flat enough for open country.
