I like to aim dead centre right behind the shoulder on moose and elk if they are little ways out there. If they are close, it's still right threw the ribs but a little lower. You don't need to hit the heart to killem, the lungs are just as good and bigger.

I like a low lung shot. The heart quickly pumps all the blood out into the chest cavity. It has been a reliable shot for me.

I used to shoot everything in the front shoulder with the old 06 and they all fell on the spot like a sack of potatoes, but when i started bow hunting i instinctivley did the same thing in the heat of mthe moment and lost the first wt and md i shot because i didnt penitrate the bone. Now i have trained myself under the fever to shoot farther back but mid body for higdth. They dont always go down right away when rifle hunting but i ruin less meat. I always used to laugh how on hunting shows the game would always run out of sight after the shot, especially when use 300 mags on 150lbs dear.

I put the bullet through the lungs, and the animal doesn't go far.I avoid head or neck shots, since I have had to track head and neck shot animals that dropped at the shot but regained their feet and ran away.I avoid the shoulders if at all possible, because it isn't required for a quick kill,it just ruins more meat.

This is interesting to me. My mother-in-law's dad states 90% of the deer he has killed has been with a head shot. He also told me the only one that ever ran more than 10 yards had an eye entry and an eye exit shot. Why are more head shots not taken? I am sure you don't mount every deer...

I'm a lower/middle lung guy myself. Broadside, right behind the shoulder. If the animals is at an angle then I try to pass the bullet right through the centre of the lungs.

For me, the brain is a pretty small target and the chance of shooting off a lower jaw and having the animal starve to death is too much to risk. Not knocking those who do it and have success but I'll leave it to the snipers that can do it consistently.

Because the brain is a very small target, and a very slightly off shot can knock off a jaw, ears,or take out an eye resulting in a wounded and lost animal. The lung area is a much larger target with much higher odds of a quick clean kill.

Amazingly, it's a pretty low percentage shot with lots of opportunity to at best completely miss or at worst, hit and not kill. There's not that much to hit in the head that will actually kill an animal. Lots of bravado with head shots though.

I need to expand on my question within this thread ... according to many on this site they can shoot the antennae off a dung beetle at 275 yards. i just figured with all the crack shots here why not take the head shot---sarcasm and the internet don't mix well... i guess it was not clear that my headshot remark was tongue in cheek

Although my father-in-law backs up his wife's father's statement of him always taking a head shot... Now, his aunt's mother's best friend's father once heard of a guy that was told by another fella the same thing as was told to him three years earlier from that guy's brother. so it must be true..

Hmmm Scotch and vacation
