Thumbs up GOABC Goes To Court re Grizzly Hunt

Hunters go to court over ban on grizzly bear hunt

B.C. professional hunting guides and outfitters are in court today to challenge a provincial ban on grizzly bear hunting that they say was purely political and not based on sound wildlife conservation science.

B.C. hunting guides and outfitters, led by Ron Fleming and his wife, Brenda Nelson, of Love Bros. & Lee are seeking certification of a class action lawsuit against the government, arguing the ban has caused them undue financial harm and was not warranted by conservation concerns.

In their petition to the BC Supreme Court, they argue that the decision to outlaw the grizzly bear hunt in B.C. has been devastating to the more than 100 guide outfitters in B.C. that relied on grizzly bear hunting as part of their business.

BC mink farmers are not happy either, a purely political decision to shut them down. They went to court for compensation and lost. Betting on a similar outcome, I hate to say.

Man I hope we win certification. This step alone is a few hundred K.
I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Interesting fact for you guys. There’s only been 5 or 6 cases that ever made it to court after receiving certification in a class action lawsuit against the Province. All other cases were settled outside of court before ever getting to that point !

They don’t want to bend but it’s impressive it’s gone this far

Heck if the hunt goes through I may even hire a guide to follow me into my old grizzly spot lol

Are you all looking for compensation or restarting the hunt?

I don’t think a (non treaty) hunt will ever be court ordered, given how the judicial deck is stacked with urban liberals.

Ideally to have the hunt reinstated, but honestly the chances of that happening are so low I’ve kind of accepted the fact we’ll never hunt grizzly again in my area unless it’s a First Nations hunt.

So compensation it is, as that’s our only remaining recourse.

Nothing from the courts yet, I believe it was scheduled for 3-4 days of hearings just for the certification portion.

They have a solid case
When I stayed at Ron and Brenda’s were up til 3 am talking about it and drinking whiskey
I hope they open it back up
It’s not about the money
It was closed to win votes and not backed by science or fact
Set the standard that wildlife isn’t a political pawn to get elected
Reopen the hunt and punish the people that closed it. Do it financially and with criminal repercussions

People don’t want bears hunted. They hate black bear hunting let alone grizzly. I’d be shocked if it gets overturned. On the slim chance it does I bet it gets enough flak to get banned again

The idea is to manage wildlife with science
Not because someone who lives 14 hours away and who has never been to that part of the province. Is opposed to it

Exactly. Was reading on LinkedIn the other day, where a fella posted his disgust that an "endangered" polar bear was shot in a northern village (as opposed to being relocated).

I held my tongue, but my inside voice was saying, "Hey, you know what? I'll gladly chip in to have the next problem bear relocated to YOUR backyard..."

Likely establish a hunt on the Ag fringe, to start with.
Play the farmer card, not the outfitter.

Our land boarders the green zone, 3-4 different grizz on our trail cams this yr.
They were not there 2-3 years ago, and the local farmers are now having encounters.

Kill as many as you want in Alberta if that’s where you’re from. Nobody will stop you
