You're going to have your ass handed to you by those trout specifically, if you dont have the patience to wait more then 5 hours for a response....

Streamers are a good choice. Try the upper sections near the springs. They will be the only parts ice free.

Try fishing the deeper pools and fish during he warmest part of he day.
I wanted to head out last weekend but ended up working late on Friday and didn't make it out.
Looks like it is getting cold again.
Good luck.

Where is Stauffer? I've heard the name but couldn't find it listed in the regs.

Locally known as the "Creek from Hell" for it's ability to humble nearly every angler.

tough or not, I'm intrigued by any trout stream open in winter. Just can't get interested in sitting over a hole in the ice.

"Frenchman's Creek" flows into "Lake X". Both are terms used by anglers to keep their spots a secret.

its fishable all through the year. As temps warm up the fish get going. However, stay off it in october. No need to bother the spawning fish.

Dave,

Is there bears on Stauffer? Certainly as possibility. I've never seen one on the 44 years and several thousand trips. Don't mean they ain't there.
Better to be concerned about attack cows and irate landowners.
Closest I got to getting tuned up by wildlife was a ****ed muskrat.

Don

One thing to watch out for is cougars, bears are always possible i guess but i know from personal experience, and have had pictures shown to me by landowners who let me access stretches of creek that cougars are present.

Bears and cougars, maybe. There used to be a white dog that would visit and scare the heck out of me. The bush is thick and noisy which had me wondering what it was that approached. I have lots of great memories at Stauffer, not very many of them involve catching fish. That isn't to say that they aren't there, but for the most part, they bested me.

One evening a friend and I emerged from the thickness surrounding Stauffer to where we had parked near the bridge on 761. We had been beaten both by the creek and the hike in and out. As we got to the guard rail a fella and his wife pulled up in a car and parked. He grabbed a spinning rod from the trunk with a single spoon tied to it, walked down to the bank next to the bridge and sent the lure in. Wham. Nice Brown, looked to be somewhere around 16 inches. We left.

Spud gun,

Only city folks are confused. Muskrats are green whereas otters are generally putrid yellow.

Hard to see Otters in the fall due to fallen leaves. They hide in fallen leaves.

Don:

Muskrat and Otter? The first thing that goes through my head is " what kind" of fly you tie with them.

On a serious note, how is the frac sand permit on the Stauffer coming along?

Thanks.

P.S.

Wags: stay out of trouble with those early season expeditions of yours.

I'm too old and tired to get into trouble. But apparently not old enough to understand what Don is saying lol
