Default Kijiji Fridge sale - doesn't work

Hey everyone,

Sunday I sold our fridge on kijiji. It worked in our house, it worked in our garage where I had it when the buyer came to pick it up.

Now this morning he contacts us saying it doesn't work. That it only blows warm air.

A) Should I care? It worked when it left my place. I don't know what happened to it afterwards.

B) If I do care. What should I do, offer him $50 back? Can't say I really want the fridge back.

What could have caused this to happen? Could transporting it in a truck laying down on it's back have caused the issue after years of standing up?

Thanks everyone

As is, where is.

I assume he saw that it was cold and working when he picked it up?

Even a new fridge should settle for a few hours before plugging it in. How old was this one?

Default fridge not working

Dad was a refrigeration mechanic & we never, ever moved fridges lying down. Best resource to find the answer is in the manual that came with the fridge.

If it was moved lying down or on its side chances are it may have damaged it.

Laying down oil will go into the compressor designed to compress gas not oil, ask me how I found that out.

I'd be hesitant buying a fridge in a garage in November. Of course it's going to be cold, whether it works or not.

If it were me, I'd take it back if the guy called me the same or next day. I mean, no reason for him to lie. Then I'd just take it to the dump. No desire to rip anyone off for $100. My integrity is worth more.

It's kijiji, sold as is where is really. As soon as it left your place you have no idea what they did to break it.

Yup, can be lay'ed on it's side if you have to, but should be set upright for a while before you plug it in again. The refrigerant will run out of the compressor, well google explains it in detail. https://www.google.ca/search?q=layin...57j0l3.14457j0
edit opps I see you have your answer by the time I typed this reply

Yes, I unplugged it in front of him before we tipped it and put it in his truck

I agree with the others.
Once it leaves your place you have no idea what they do to it. Once it's off your property, not your problem. You are not Costco and take returns. Sales on Kijiji are always as is where is no matter what your selling. If you sold it knowing it was in good working condition, and now it's not.....oh well.....

When you move a fridge you shouldn't plug it in for a few days. Something to do with the freon. Tell him to let it sit unplugged and try it again in a few days.

Sold as is.....buyer beware.

I've kind of got two minds about this one. The as is where is comments above cover the one mind. Tell you a little story - A guy I work with wanted a winter beater. He bought an old Ford Ranger off Kijiji for $600. Well he gets it home and parks it, the next day the transmission won't come out of park. He called the guy he bought it from, not looking for a refund or anything, just asking if he knew what went wrong. The guy wasn't able to offer any advice but did give him $300 bucks back that same day. This guy didn't have to do that by any means and he wasn't asked for a penny.

Years from now when I look back at how I've lived my life, I know how I want remembered.

One other thought is that he may be trying to play you knowing you don't want the fridge back and its a biotch to move so how can he be expected to return it kinda thing. I would ask him to bring it back and you'll refund the money and use it as a smoker (or some other excuse why you could use it). Otherwise he may just say its not working counting on you to assume he's telling the truth and offer an easy refund whilst keeping the working fridge.

If the buyer isn't BS'ing you, he should known that's the risk you take buying something used off of Kijiji at a discount rather than spending the coin to buy new. I realize you likely feel bad, but the reality is it worked to the best of your knowledge, and for all you know buddy messed it up during or after transport and is now trying to take advantage of your goodwill.

As such, I would politely tell him that. You're under no obligation to do anything.

He bought it, once it leaves your driveway it’s his. You didn’t scam him, he saw it working.

If a fridge is tipped, I’d wait a few days before plugging in.

Had this happen when I sold a chest freezer, just gave the lady her money back. To me it’s Karma and integrity.

Actually, some people do. Just heard of a case of this the other day. Mind you, in that case it was more than $100, but definitely less than $1000.

If it worked when he picked it up then it's not your problem.
I'd ask if he laid it down and if he did, tell him to leave it stand for a few days before plugging it in and try it again.
If it still didn't work, I'd give him his money back.
I've been on both sides of the coin and never asked for my money back.
Bought a van off my sister once and the motor threw a piston through the side of the block a couple of days later. It happens

I bought a couple of deep cycle batteries off someone here a few years back and they turned out to be ****....However, I let it go as it was not worth it to pursue as the member is a great guy and meant no harm. I believe they sat too long, rarely used but were too old by the time I got them....Oh well...

Aggrevation is not worth a few dollars. Take the fridge back and give his money back. Would you be happy with a broken fridge you paid money for? Just take it back. It is not an apartment store, but I have my pride and integrity. Benefit of the doubt to the buyer. My view.

I was going to post this in another thread but the fridge experts are here already.

I bought an old Viking, brought it home and plugged it in. It worked great for two months. I then unplugged it because I didn't need it for a while. I plugged it back in after another 2 months and it won't get cold. I wonder what happened.
