Default Calgary Bound, need advice

Will be heading north of Calgary to pick up an old car between Christmas and new years and am looking for suggestions on decent hotels where I can park a truck and trailer . Not sure what the temps are there and am driving a 2nd Gen Cummins with a 20' single vehicle trailer, so might need to plug in.

Thanks in advance....

Sorry for the generalities folks I guess more details would help!!!

Yes driving in from Winnipeg.

Will be heading to Sylvan Lake.

And don't worry, I'm not moving there just a grab and run but am wanting to find a decent place that can accommodate my setup....

I don't think he wants his trailer stolen ! The place is crawling with bums. Homeless people sleeping behind the bottle depot, not that there is anything wrong with that ! He did say decent hotels.

I agree the Deerfoot in.

Avoid the Glenmore in, sketchy hotel in a sketchy neighborhood!

I'll agree with the Deerfoot Inn, but I'll add that the Glenmore Inn itself isn't sketchy, merely its surroundings. I would agree that with the bottle depot, etc being there that more sketchy types will be around.

I've been to many functions at the Glenmore Inn from company Christmas parties to vendor training sessions to safety training and have enjoyed their excellent Sunday brunches since 1980. Their food was always excellent and the staff was always attentive, I'd not give a second thought to staying there, though I'd never have the need to stay in a hotel a 14 minute drive from where I live. The parking lot at night however could give me pause for consideration.

As for weather, we get way milder winters than the 'Peg, but we can get cold spells blow in for anywhere from a couple of days to a week. Not sure what the weather during your time frame will entail, but if you're from Winnipeg you'll be more than prepared

Visual deterrents such as a big steering wheel 'club' can often redirect scumbags to easier targets in terms of the vehicle being stolen, so far as contents theft that's another matter.

Make sure your insurance is proper in all aspects.

Wouldn't be the first time a full rig was stolen from a hotel parking lot while the owner slept in the hotel.

Not trying to be insulting or anything but cross province policy's could prove to be ugly if you don't have it all worked out before hand, and even then.

Make sure you're covered.

Thanks for advice folks.....................all appreciated.

Not my first rodeo so have the necessary insurances in place which usually doesn't mean much because its only provides peace of mind and when you have to deal with insurance companies all hell breaks lose.

Manitoba has a mandatory immobilizer program on vehicles, so if they want they will have to work for it. Trailer will have its own security system as well....

And additional blue cross coverage for me in case I run into any AOF members.....! Just Kidding

If you are getting the car in Sylvan and don't have a specific need to be in Calgary, Stay in Strathmore, rooms are cheaper, and you can by pass Calgary by going up highway 9 on the East side. Way less likely to have you gear messed with and there are lots of Hotels/Motels with plenty of room to park you truck and trailer.

If you need to be in Calgary, Deerfoot Inn is a good choice as are the Hotels on the north side near the airport. There are a ton of good places along Barlow. The newest ones are on the far north piece of Barlow south of the airport and on Barlow on the North side of the airport. They area is industrial so very little moving around after dark. Airdre has a few newer places as well.

Don't worry about having to plug in your vehicle. Saw on TV from a real reliable source that Climate Change in Calgary area has hot winds melting 8 feet of snow in minutes and creating summertime conditions in the winter.
Hopefully Edm. is next.

If you're heading to Sylvan Lake, I wouldn't even come into Calgary.

I'd find a motel in Strathmore, 30 mins east of Calgary. Then turn off on the Calgary ring road (Stoney Trail) and head up to Sylvan.

There's even a new motel in Bassanno, right on the highway beside the Esso that might work. That would be about 40 min east of Strathmore.

And I need to add; the Glenmore Inn isn't sketchy. CaberTosser described it pretty well.

edit: Dean2 kind of beat me to it. But by going my way, the OP has the option to stop and take in the spendour of Bass Pro.

I live right across from the glenmore inn thanks for saying I live in a sketchy neighbourhood lol The glenmore inn is nice but I do t think there's plug ins maybe you you could go borrow a stolen generator from one of the bums by the liquor store to plug the truck in.The neighbor hood has sketchy people in it there's about 10-15 homeless people cruising the streets but there pretty harmless just looking for bottles or copper. Its mostly a older person community.

Hotel prices smaller towns vs Calagary, Deersfoot Inn $140, Holiday inn Strathmore $85, Imperial Hotel Bassano $75, Brand new R&R Inn Bassano $100. Just to backup what Bigsky was saying.

I echo this...why come all the way into Calgary??
Sylvan is 165 km's North of Calgary. You're adding over 200 kms' onto your drive, as well as over two hours travelling time (return trip).

Shortest rout is this one. Nowhere NEAR Calgary.
If you just want to crash for the night, stay in any small-town Motel. Can keep an eye on the rig, and save yourself money.

Dress in camo and park in a Walmart parking lot. Throw out a few lawn chairs and your good to go!
