No idea, but if you search the forum, treeguy had some magpie threads on the go with some good ideas and laughs.

Halford Hides has the kit for you to assemble. Now that I have assembled one find their style online and you could make yourself

That doesn't work. They catch cats. When you approach, the cat tears the trap to ratchit when they escape.

Sorry for digging up an older thread, I know I'm liable to get my head chopped off

The trap listed above works perfectly! From my experience, the trap does not need to be round. Square works just as well as the round one does. I built a square one around a frame of 2x2's and it performed admirably. The entry cone is the crucial part; make sure the height at the smallest point is 2" high.

2x2 frame, and chicken wire for the exterior and Hardware cloth (wire mesh, different from chicken wire) for the entry cone. I built my trap when I was 10 and 12 years later it still catches magpies.

Edit: I have also caught my fair share of cats in this trap. If it is built correctly the cats wont destroy it, just jump around inside and crush the entry cone. Remove the cat, re-bait the trap and re-bend the entry cone and you are golden!

Default The Older the Better

Fresh snow Sat night, collapsed the trap but there wwere 8 magpies in Sunday afternoon. Rinsed said trap and Monday afternoon there were six in it. Rinsed the trap and today there were 4 Magpies in it. Rinsed again and can't wait till tomorrow. I built this from new chicken wire and it took a couple years of being out in the weather for it to work. The most I have ever had was 11 in it at once. Then you want to leave one in it for bait (They talk to each other but I think they are like fishermen and Hunters, they lie!) Just google for plans. And Halford does sell them.

Default Still Catching

The trap went empty for a couple days and then on Thursday there were three in it, Friday saw 4 and now there are three more with one potential.

Default 2 more and a coyote

Oh, make that 5 inside and a coyote just walked by to scope out the chatter! By the time the 223 was loaded he was gone? What good is an unloaded gun, anyhow?

Ever consider renting it out?.... you get to keep the magpies and any cats it catches.

Default magpie traps, where to buy

My grand-daddy used to speak of the ceremony
known as a "double rinse" whilst magpie trapping.
Seems to me you boys are using the correct protocol.

Default 6 more

Well, I put the trap away while I was gone for two weeks. Cleared the snow away the other day (Tuesday) and reloaded the trap with fresh deer tallow and trimmings. Wed Morn there were 4 in it and three on the outside. Went down to rinse it and was going to leave one in as an attractant but it escaped. By 3:30 in the afternoon there were three more in it. And the story goes on.

Whats the detail with rinsing ??

I've got a trap I bought from a place in Manitoba....works but after I've caught 2 or 3, I usually shoot them inside the trap, with a .22 but they are too smart to go for it day after day....

I can't find those 5 story town house magpie traps Treeguy made.

Any idea how to refine my search?

Because we can't shoot them in the city.

TreeGuy's trap is up for auction in the PIF thread!

I'll loan my magpie trap out in the Calgary area. I've caught dozens with it. Need a pickup to haul it due to its size, it's about a 4' x 4' cylinder size, perhaps a bit wider. I'm not going outside in this awful weather to measure it though

X2. I had to laugh one day when I came home to find 9 magpies and my daughters cat in the trap. The cat didn't kill any of the birds, but was he ever having a miserable time with all 9 of them tormenting the crap out of him. My daughters first chore when the school bus dropped her off, was to get out her 4/10, and take care of the magpies. As for the cat, she never went anywhere the trap ever again.

I love the idea of a dual purpose trap. Magpies AND cats. Might help bring in coyotes, live bait.
