Default Fishing Koocanusa Lake

Hey AO Members,

I am heading down to koocanusa for the long weekend to go house boating and was hoping to wet a line while I was down there. I will probably be blackout drunk for the majority of the time but when/if I am not I would love to hook into some rainbows or kokanee.

I understand the the majority of fishing is done with down riggers and wedding bands and willows etc. But I was wondering if any members could shed some light on productive surface or streamer fishing for some fat bows and kokanee.

Thank you for your time.

KooCanusa is a big lake and you did not mention where on the lake you would be but it sounds like you have the tricks of the trade down for Kokanee.
For the trout i would be trying where the Elk enters the lake or the Kootney. I wasn't fishing, but was on the lake Saturday where the Elk runs in and it seemed people were doing well at the mouth. There are many creeks running into Koocanusa that are home to some huge bullies that would be worth doing a little homework on also.

Thank you for the response but I must clarify.

I do not have down riggers, wedding bands and all that jazz. I was hoping to be able to catch kokanee and rainbows with my 6wt fly rod floating line. I was thinking that I might be able to get some fish to feed on the surface? (hoppers, backswimers, morning/evening hatches) or troll a streamer (wolly bugger, scuplins, muddler minnow etc)

Would I have any luck with these suggested methods or do you need to have the down riggers for kokanee or fish inlets for bows?

Hopefully that clarifies. Also I will be doing all the fishing on the western Canadian side of the lake.

Thank you,

Yeah it's gonna be tough from the houseboat during the day but at night depending on where you are when your beached the lights from the back of the boat attract bugs and fish...Iv'e done it at Shuswap shouldn't be any different!
