Woodland caribou sighting.
I was out sledding west of fort st jhon and came across 5 caribou. I watched them for about 5 minutes at 100yards until they moved on.
Cool to see them out and about IMG_3113.jpgIMG_3115.jpg

I thought they shed their antlers earlier in the year? Or would it only be the bulls that have dropped already?

Ive seen them sledding around valemount before. No wonder they are endangered, have to be one of the dumbest animals to run around in 20' of snow.

The deep snow allows them to reach the tree lichen that makes up the bulk of their diet in winter. They are specialists - they need old growth forest or there is no lichen, and they need the deep snow to reach more of it.
I've only seen them in the wild twice - both times in Jasper NP. Also had a chance to see them in a maternal pen project near Revvy. Not the same with the fence around them but still pretty amazing creatures.

Grew up in the Milligan Creek area and we would see them from time to time. This would have been in the 80's. They were dumb as a stump. Wave a red rag out of the truck and they would run towards you. They would usually stop and look at you from about 20 yards and then take off. No season as far as I remember in the area. We really only hunted moose and bear in the area. Shot lots of wolves though to protect the cattle.

The only one I ever saw was by Whitecourt off goose main road about 15 years ago.....I was driving and had a laborer with me, we passed a cutline and he said "you have to turn around, there was some kind of crazy animal on that cutline"...I asked him what it was, and he said "if I didnt know any better, id say it looked like an f'ing unicorn". Turns out it was a woodland caribou with one antler, lol. he had no clue we had Caribou in Ab.

Very cool pic.
One thing guys, best not to post any current locations. There is a certain segment of the population who legally can and will hunt them, when I was working up north the bio's told us to keep it quiet so as to protect the few caribou that are left.

In this range, they're a relic species from the ice age, their populations have been slowly dwindling since the last ice age, and unless the climate changes to dramatically colder, they'll die out. No matter what people do, or do not do.
IMO, the resources (and restrictions) that we pour into this species is only slightly delaying their inevitable demise, and would be best used to assist species where we *can* make a difference.
Yes they're beautiful animals. I've watched them many times in Jasper NP, but IMO, they're simply doomed this far south.

We saw a herd of 8 at km. 68 wandering down the "Old Conklin Road" last week. We followed them for about 1 km. Over the years that I have lived in the are and used the road, I have seen quite a few up in that area. Lots of old growth forest. They do, however, get hunted by "subsistence hunters".

The caribou do wander around. Road hunters drive the north end of the road down to km 48(Round Hill Tower) at all times of the year, killing mostly moose & deer. Caribou are not passed up if they see a herd.

I thought wolves and resource development was their biggest threat. I used to see quite a few 10 years ago not so many now.

Species
I thought Woodland Caribou were a "Species at Risk" classification and no harvest was permitted, regardless of race?

When one considers the amount of $$ spent just to save the 90 Smokey River caribou for costs like Air wolf out of Grande Cache I would venture WAG that probably $10K per each animal saved. Now with the latest AB budget for the fancy 100 sg mile fence will even be much higher cost per each caribou saved. I just cannot imagine how we can justify someone shooting one for meat.
