I am not sure if this going to be helpful or not. There is a website called Dan Hurd prospecting, mostly he pans for gold, but he also has an interest in other rocks. There is one place where he picks up "ocean picture stone". I just thought I would add this.

Nothing exotic about fuchsite in Canada.

What would be the obvious differences between Quartz and Chert?
As they are both mostly composed of Silicon.

OOh, the Arrogance. I only took basic geology in university, enough to know what I see when I travel about . still trying to figure out wh
ether permafrost is a valid term , or should it be pergilisol. if I found a piece of granite at the headwaters of the Red Deer river, I would say WTF.

May as well add flint to the trio, silicon is the second most abundant common element on the planet.

Chert is formed by chemical sedimentation and is extremely fine grained. Where quartz comes from an igneous / magmatic source.
They are chemically the same mineral as you point out.
For chert vs quartz you really do need to look at the setting, pure chert however will have a conchoidal fracture (thing how thick glass looks when shattered) due to its extremely fine grained nature.

No arrogance intended just stating my background. From the link you posted:
“Greenish, Cr-bearing variety of muscovite” (which might sound familiar if you read the UofA profs response)
Not sure whom ****ed in your cornflakes but I’ll defer to your expert opinion on all things going forward. God forbid someone actually post the right answer on this forum.

I always get a kick out of the fact that there is a rare mineral named after my surname, not that I know who the discoverer was. Logic often supersedes "Expert" opinion. Occam's Razor.

So what most people find laying around is Quartz and not Chert, correct?
Seems like very little Chert around Alberta other than possibly outcroppings of chert bearing formations, ie: Badheart , Cardium etc.
I have found lot's of Agate in the Smokey river valley which is also the same mineral as Chert, Flint, Jasper, Chalcedony which are all on my list to look for.

This is a brain coral I picked up lying in a creek, while trail riding, pretty good size, interesting in that the whole animal has been replaced by what I believe precipitated quartz and then eroded out of the matrix.
