Best place/price to fill a propane tank in Calgary?
I was really surprised to find out that you can no longer fill a propane tank in Cochrane. ..so now I am looking in Calgary. But it seems everyone is moving to that tank exchange program.
anyone have any recommendations on where to go and who has the best price?

Check out this thread: All the latest prices/locations of pre-filled and bulk filled.
Cheapest by far is Costco. Refills for 20 lb tanks as a flat rate. $8.39 right now. ($7.99 + gst)
30's are $11 and the 40's are $17. (no matter how full/empty it is)
Most expensive is the tank exchange.
Co Op's are $1.10 per litre, and you only pay for what they put in. Plus they will actually fill it with 20 lbs of propane. Costco and tank exchange will only put in 17.6 lbs.

Thanks Dave!
That thread was excellent...sorry I missed it!
And apparently you know a lot about propane and propane accessories!
Now...if I go to Costco and ask for the full 20 pounds...will they give it to me? I know you said they won't, but I will be sure to explain that a properly filled tank should weigh 37 lbs and that accounts for the 20% extra expansion space.

You can get your propane tanks refilled North of Cochrane - at the Springhill Shell station (on Hwy 22 and 567) or Bottrel (20 minutes north of town)
Might not be the cheapest but beats having to go to the city IMO

No they won't do it. It's their own "policy" to only fill to an 80% capacity. It even says on their price tag that it includes "8 kg's of lpg". Even though the tanks are safely designed to hold 20 net lbs of propane. But even at 17 lbs for $8 is a pretty great deal.

Well...Just went to Costco at Beacon Hill in the NW and wow!
$7.29 + tax for a 20 pounder. Filled three tanks for $22.96, which is pretty much the price to fill one at Co-op...and I can't do the math fast enough to figure how many tanks that is in comparison to those screw-you-over exchange programs!

I remember pumping propane @ Mohawk for 13.9c/l when I was in my teens, possibly even 12.9c/l.

Propane price today.
Just an update. Got some propane at Hughes Petroleum in Sherwood Park.
30# was $32.50
20# was $15.95
and a roughly 1/2 of a 30# was $20.95 for a total with GST of $72.87
Plus their sign says "Fixed Price per Cylinder" so I guess I was lucky on the 1/2 full 30#

Need Costco to install propane fill stations at all their locations, which might put an end to this $30/20lb robbery.
I fill my tanks at Costco in Okotoks whenever I do my grocery run. The only times I get hosed on propane now is when I'm on the road with the RV trailer, but even then the cost is balanced out by the rest of the fills.
When I heard about Costco I was in disbelief. When I went to Costco and had the receipt in my hand, I thought there had to be some kind of mistake. Even having filled there quite a few times now, I still get "Start the car! Start the car!" going through my head.
