Default Sad: How you know the Deer Rut is on

I came home early today and was coming up hwy 43 west of Whitecourt, and I saw a deer carcass on the shoulder.

70 yards beyond where the carcass was, I see this thing on the pavement and I realized it was one of his antlers and it was big.

So I stopped and went back, grabbed it (right side), then walked back to the dead deer.
The left side was also ripped right out of his skull and was in underneath the deer.

I know you are not supposed to take antlers off a dead animal, but neither was attached to the deer anyway, so I took them.

And this was a damn big buck. Heavy bases, mass all the way out the beams.
Clearly was a 5x5 at least, and I can look at that and claim that was likely a 160"+ buck.

I absolutely hate to see such a gorgeous buck killed like that.

But one thing for dead certain; when bucks like that are getting blown up mid-morning right on a 4 lane highway, you know the deer rut is on.

Nov 11 2022.

You might want to contact your local fish and wildlife office and let them know you took these and how to go about legally keeping them.

Check the regs on this.

If they were still attached it would be a dead head, but they weren't!
I see no issues. Now if they were, make the call and then cut them off.

It is terrible to see for sure. They just outright lose all sense of what keeps them alive for the previous 11 months.

^ Ya I know you cannot cut them off a road kill, but these were literally blown right off the buck.

Shrapnel on the pavement.

Deer get hit all year round
He could have been chased out of the bush by hunters, or wolves or a cougar

Everyone, don't listen to this.

These antlers are still considered "wildlife".
Cut off antlers would also fit in the legal definition of "wildlife".
Legally, they are not legal to possess without a permit.

Only antlers that have been naturally shed and have the full pedicle attached are considered "exuvia", and no longer "Wildlife".
These are legal to possess without a permit.

That’s why I said to check the regs.

Found Dead Wildlife

When driving or walking, hunters often find dead wildlife that they would like to keep. In most cases it is unlawful to possess such wildlife or parts of wildlife without first obtaining a permit. Contact a Fish and Wildlife office to apply for such a permit before taking possession of the wildlife.

A found dead wildlife permit is 20 bucks
It’s foolish not to get one

Over the years I’ve likely found dozens of deadheads on the farm, never once would I consider paying 20 bucks.

Have to agree with this, I’m not paying $20. Bucks to remove something from my field that could ruin my tractor tire, or machinery. Side of the highway, if that’s the law then I guess, but zero interest in doing that anyway.

Oh for sure
To me, finding one on the farm, say in the spring
Is different that one that was run over on the highway an hour or 2 ago
There was a decent 160 Ish 5x5 that was hit right in front of my shop a couple years ago. I got the permit, paid the $20 bucks because I didn’t want the grief
I eurod that buck also
On the farm, they just got thrown in the pile
If it was a 180+
I’d be getting a permit…. Because it wouldn’t be going into the pile lol

I think it’s only $11

And this is why the internet doesn’t work well for many people…

Lol
As said by others, they are a puncture risk for tractors and equipment
If it’s getting displayed or transported, it gets a permit
If it’s not, then it gets thrown in the pile

I don’t think I’ve ever read “legal” advice from you.

While one must get a permit according to law, I see it as picking and eating a few blueberries hiking a trail in a Provincial/National Park. No harm done.

X2 and I've used the hand saw in the truck to get it done. As I recently heard a senior F& W officer say, the law is black and white, the application is gray.
