Default ML Questions Again

Can any one in the "know" fill me in on the difference of .44 or .45 cal sabots.Should I stick with the .45's or are the smaller one's OK.I had the missus pick me up some 50 cal SST's .45 250 gr and she came home with .44 240gr. XTP's.Also while trying to find this info out on another site I came across a thread saying not to use bore butter on the modern inlines, especially with sabots, any input here? And finally can anyone suggest a good beginners book for shooting modern ML's and where I might find one in the Capitol City/Edson area?Thanx.

Bore Butter is a definte no no....don't use it. A very light coat of oil is okay for storage but otherwise just leave the barrel dry.

I take it you are shooting a .50 calibre muzzleloader? If then, either size bullet is fine as long as it is being used with the proper .50 cal sabot. There has been a real move away from .45 calibre hollow-point bullets in recent times and a growing popularity in .44 calibre bullets. She quite likely didn't get the wrong thing...that's likely all they had. While the .45 calibre XTPs were only designed to be shot with a maximum of 100 grains of powder, the .44 calibre XTPs are likely equipped with the black sabots and will work with 150 grain powder charges.

If you were looking for SSTs though, then there is a real difference in performance between the two bullets. The XTPs were a good bullet in their day but are no where near to SSTs in ballistic coefficient and in performance.

Yes it is a new 50 cal Genesis. On the package it says 50cal-.44-240 grain and the sabots are green.I heard the fellow tell her he had what I asked for but he must have got mixed up.No matter anyway. What is the difference in the color anyway?

The sabots are colour coded to match the calibre of the bullet. Check out the MMP site if you want to learn more than you ever wanted to know about sabots. Del makes 99% of the sabots you see pre packaged with bullets today.

You might want to check out http://www.chuckhawks.com/index2h.muzzleloader.htm

Lots of info there. I'd take some of the stuff Randy Wakeman says with a grain of salt but overall he knows his muzzleloaders. He tends to get a bit excited about new products and then often does a total flip flop a few months later but overall his info is solid.

Hey how 'bout you and Rich doing a "How To" video to add to your lineup.I bet it would sell like hotcakes at the spring shows.

Don't exceed 100 grains of Pyrodex with those green sabots. They just don't have the where-with-all and accuracy goes out the window.

No, sabots are shot out of a dry barrel. I clean my MLs well with TC's #13 and make sure is very dry after and leave it that way. I don't use any oil products in the barrel unles I'm putting the gun in storage for a long time.
