If it's really old it may not have a serial number.

When I phoned the CFC to register my Nylon 66 they told me the serial number for some of them was under the metal on which the scope mounted. It meant that I'd have to take some parts off of the rifle to get to it. I told them that I wasn't experienced enough and freom what I had read it was not that simple to do. So she said we would register it as a rifle with no serial number and they would send me the certificate of registration and later a sticker to put on the rifle as it's new serial number. Didn't have any trouble registering it. One phone call to get some info and validation numbers from CFC, fill out on-line form and within no time had everything I needed.

Serial numbers are supposed to be on the receiver portion of the gun and not the barrel. Not saying it isn't possible but it's highly unlikely with a mainstream manufacturer like Remington.

Default Rem66

K&B the older 66's didn't come with a serial number. I have a very old Mohawk brown gun that doesn't have a serial number. I think they started with serial numbers in 1966. FS
