Default Weatherby Vanguard Action

No idea what made me think of this but a random thought I had about my Weatherby Vanguard, chambered in .270 in a Walnut/ Stainless configuartion.

The other day I shot a coyote, made a nice clean shot and put it down right away. (.270 with 130 grain powerpoints seems to be highly effective on Coyotes)

So without ejecting the spent casing or cycling the bolt, I tried to put the safety back on and noticed that you cannot engage the safety after the gun has been fired without first cycling the bolt.

Is this normal?

Just currious, clearly it is not an issue with a spent casing in the chamber. Just a force of habit to me to engage the safety while carrying the rifle.

Yes that is normal for that rifle and many others.

Some rifles if I am not mistaken once the trigger has been fired (sear disengaged) will not go into a safe position without cycling the bolt first as the sear must be engaged in order for the safety to be able to go on.

i only have two bolt rifles, and both will not let you put the safety on unless there is one in the chamber.

which makes sense to me.

Yes it does make sense, I guess I just never thought of it before.

You can definitely engage the safety without actually having a round in the chamber, it will engage with the bolt closed but chamber empty.
