Question Question re: AI chamberings

What's the deal with Ackley improved chamberings? What's improved?

Case shoulder is blown out to 40 degrees, and body taper is gone, makes room for more powder, and some belive it makes for a more efficient combustion chamber. This all lends itself to more velocity, thus making it 'improved' over the parent case.

The short answer is recoil...

The long one details shoulder radius and case capacity...

So I'm gathering higher volocity with less recoil?

Higher velocity, more efficiency. Less recoil would go against a basic law of physics.

Also once you fireform brass for your chamber you will likely never have to trim that brass again.

Basically zero trimming when reloading as well.

Ummmmmm no.

Ackley and Weatherby both had there take on improving on common cases, both would modify shoulder areas and hog out chambers to "improve" case capacity while still being able to use common brass after fire forming...

Extra case volume makes more room for powder, more powder makes bullets go faster (or so the plan was), more recoil is the byproduct... Oh and excellerated throat erosion can be a nasty side effect...

If one thinks the .375H&H was a tame boomer just try it after its been reamed to a weatherby...

Very true. Less case stretch and longer brass life is the biggest gain. Great shoulder angle. Recoil will def increase with powder capacity.

Why not?? A Full custom 7mm-08AI in Rem. 722 weighing in at 6lb 11oz. Including scope, sling and 4bullets. Wildcat stock, teflon coated, skeeved and trued action. Short compact sweet sheep rifle.
I'll admit to a sweet 6lb custom anyday!! And the bigger calibers can't kill an animal any more dead!
It's an awesome gun!!

sounds like a sweet rifle sheep, but I would have had it chambered in the husband version of the case, you know 308...... hahahaha
