what about doves?
The snipe thread got me to thinking about another species here at home. The dove population has sky-rocketed here locally over the last few years, and I often wondered if it was lawful to shoot them. In the southern states and south america, they are definitely considered pests/vermin. We seem to be incubating them up here, so why not get to shoot a few? It would be interesting to try eating a few to see what all the fuss is down south.
What is the law here regarding doves, and has anyone had first-hand experience on the grill with them?

I know that they hunt doves in Texas but those look nothing like the rock pigeons I keep seeing around here. I have not seen any doves here personally.

IIRC, there was an attempt recently to make Doves legal game in Alberta.
Don't know if it is still on the table.
I've shot Mourning doves in BC. Tasty Little buggers.

Hunted them in Cuba .
They boiled them in the oil or grilled them.
Nothing special .

Doves are legal targets in some jurisdictions and are covered under migratory bird act I believe. I've shot morning doves and white wings as well as rock doves [pigeons]. They are all good eating. We used to shoot them on their flyways. Get a few birds down and put them on the ground with their wings spread for decoys. We had some fast and furious shooting.
I have Eurasian collared doves on my place. They showed up about 10 years ago, they nest and there are a few more every year. Introduced species and I think they may be classified as invasive.

We seem to have an increasing numbers of the Eurasian collared Doves. should be considered an invasive species, but I've never managed to get a clear answer.

dove hunt is dependent on numbers counted by AEP but they have not counted them yet.

I really miss opening day of the dove hunt in Texas. Doves are great eating if you get enough of them. Throw a dove breast in half a jalapeņo, wrap in bacon. Grill it. Delicious appetizer.
Well anything stuffed in a jalapeņo and wrapped in bacon is delicious, but dove is especially so.

i believe a dove season has successfully opened in the past year or two in Quebec. There is talk of those seasons opening up in the west as well......

season
Anxious to see if they ever do open a season here. The majority seem to disappear fairly early in the fall, and I think it would make for some decent early gunning to get out and get yourself severely humbled with a shotgun
I hunted them for a short period in Argentina, but our main purpose there at the time was free-range red stag, so we didn't put a lot of attention on them. They were late in their season while we were there, so we only experienced hundreds in the air at one time, instead of the normal "thousands". They are so abundant they were considered vermin. Our guides never even made the attempt to pick them up, the landowner just wanted them shot. Still waiting to try a feed of them.

I remember when I first saw a couple collared doves at my neighbors a half mile away. Now the bird counter tell me I got over a hundred in my yard. The red tails and the prairie falcons seem to like them but never take enough to prevent me from having more next year.
