Curious why you want the velvet off? I looked forward to trying to get one in velvet. Found usually by the end of the first week of September they're few and far between for having velvet still.

The whitetails here are all still in velvet. Suprisingly enough the elk are still in velvet and we were sitting on the deck listening to a couple bugle. Nice evening!!

Thank you all for the positive feedback, good to know about the mules in 305, my friend is going to like that one,he got drawn for his mule deer buck, long time wait. Reasoning for wanting velvet off is because of the whole procedure once you have shot the buck with velvet. As I've heard...if you do not do it right and take good care of it right away it will start rotting, I've never shot one in velvet,if anybody can help me out with that it would be greatly appreciated

I'd say as a bow hunter trying to get a velvet buck is what we all strive for. Just get it to a taxidermist or freezer as soon as you can. They can still euro mount it in velvet if you don't want to pay for a shoulder mount. Also if it does rot and you don't treat it properly the taxidermist can spray the fake velvet on which is just the next best thing to recreating your buck. I guess everyone has different opinions but getting a buck in full velvet is a great accomplishment. Mine was taken on Sept 7th and all he had left was 10" of scrap velvet hanging off each base. I got it preserved after letting it dry in my garage.
