Default Hunting Big Game in a Bird Sanctuary

While on our way to a piece of land that a friend of mine owns, my hunting buddy and I took a turn on down the wrong range road which led us to Whitford Lake. We pulled in and started to do a U turn we spotted a couple of whitetails staring at us. Now if we had whitetail tags (We only had mule tags at the time) would we be able to shoot them while they were in the sanctuary? I know a guy isn't aloud to have a shotgun in a Bird Sanctuary, but assuming that we get permission to be there can a person hunt big game? Would a bird sanctuary be considered a wildlife sanctuary also?

You'll need to check the specifics of Whitford Lake but you can hunt in about 90% of bird sanctuaries as long as you aren't carrying a shotgun. No permission needed.
