Default weapon of choice for a cougar hunt

i have lucked out to get myself into a cougar hunt this winter. i am torn if i should try and arrow the kitty or take firepower. i have an old lever 32 special that would probably work quite well, as well as multiple different higher velocity magnums. i would really like to try practise with the bow somehow shooting straight up. whats your guys opinion?

My wife shot her's last year with her 7mm-08. Piled up like a cheap tent. I'm sure a well placed arrow would do the same.

The bow would be my choice. That being said I killed mine with a Marlin in 44 mag so your .32 should be more than enough. If you are hunting with dogs shots should be quite close.

Bow and arrow is fun but make sure you practice lots before you go. Nothing worse than a badly placed arrow in a cat and dogs jumping on the cat if its not dead when coming out of the tree. If a dog happens to get loose and piles in on top of a broadhead sticking out your not going to be happen. Lots of smaller caliber rifles will do the trick. .243 would be a good choice. 30-30 another. They are not a very tough animal with a well placed shot.

Default Lots of solid comments already, so

I was gonna say try this T-shirt and your alcoholic beverage of choice, but apparently soft serve will work too.

Good point. It'll likely be colder than you normally shoot you bow as well, shouldn't cause any gear issues but be sure that your setup works with your winter clothes.

A good way to practice for a bow shot on a cat...

Hang a block (pulley) off a good tree limb or pole
Run rope through block to archery target
Makes for quick and easy arrow retrieval
Always make sure it's safe in behind target before practicing
Have fun

My neighbor whom's house I can see from my kitchen window to the north is an avid cougar hunter and guide and a nice fellow. However, his GD hounds have kept me awake many nights until I put in some ear plugs. Anyhow, once the dogs tree the cat, he uses a Winchester 94 in 30-30 to dispatch the cat. He owes me a cougar hunt for having to wear ear plugs at night......LOL

Default weapon of choice x x a cougar hunt.

Spear.....on the ground.....wait wait....on a leaner, close to eye level...now there's a hunt. Wouldn't be a throw, more of a thrust.

Use anything handy as long as at the end of the day, it's not moving...
Sorry for sounding off but on my trapline, that is one animal that cannot stay..
At the end of HIS day, it will be him or ME..

Ive just never pictured myself shooting my bow at that kind of an angle upwards. I am quite proficient with my bow just dont know what to expect. Ive never been on a cat hunt but ive seen pictures where they are way the hell up and it doesnt look very archery friendly.

I would choose the gun. I actually had a spooky cougar encounter at the end of last season. After that, I wouldn't go after one without something loud, powerful and easily reload-able.
