Default Pike Help Wanted

Hey guys, I am looking for some advice on fly fishing for pike. I currently have an 8 wt Redington Predator and Rise Reel. I have landed a few smaller pike on it while fishing for other species.

My question is what is the best bet for leader while gunning for big pike. Are you using fluro or tie-able wire?

I am ordering new Rio line next week and setting up 2 more fly rods. So I will have a setup for big pike, just wanted some input on a way to not loose my pike flies.

Any tips on a Rio setup would be great.

Thanks in advance

I use 40lb saltwater low stretch mono for leaders on my setup. Caught pike from 8 inches to 44 inches....

make sure you get the rio pike line
i use both ways 8ft of 60lb mono
or 6ft of 60lb mone with a 2ft wire with a snap swivel on the end makes changing flys easy!

Dont over extend your leaders for pike. Its alot harder to turn over a long leader with a heavy fly on the end. 80 Saugar Flouro does the trick and add a snap on the end so you can change flies.

I have a few of my own leaders made up for pike out of 30" of coated 20 lb wire line (or whatever length you want for turnover). I crimp a snap on one end and a loop on the other.

White river bass line is what I use. Turns over nice, no need to be delicate when targetting pike. And at $30-40 much cheaper than the rio.

Homemade leaders.

4ft 40lb maxima
1ft 20lb maxima shock tippet.
1-2ft seguar 30lb.

Haven't had a pike break me off yet. Found the formula on a Muskie site.

Cheers

Is there any decent pike fishing close to Calgary?Pretty sure there's some in Glenmore Res,but are they abundant or few and far between??I haven't fished for pike since 20 odd years ago(?) in ONT and never on the fly.I'm thinkn it might be something fun to do during that period in June when runoff has the Bow all riled up and the ES1 streams aren't open yet?Plus it'll gimme an excuse to tie some big'ol gaudy flies and put a good bend in the spey rod?

I am not overly concerned with price as I get pro-staff rates at Sage, Redington and Rio. I currently have an 8wt Predator that feels great. Going to pick up a spey rod and reel soon when I place my order so just gonna get a spare spool and set it up for pike. Thanks for the tips guys. I am definitely gonna use some of this advice and try for my 50" beast.
