They hand out a ton of tags for the zone and there are only about 3 roads in the whole area. Anything close to a road will be shot the month before opening by unregulated hunters. Add the fact there are probably more Atv’s, sxs’s and Argos per capita in Fort McMurray than anywhere else in the country and a lot of people go home disappointed each year. I bought a jet boat thinking I could get away from the crowds but two years ago I was on the Firebag River in late September with 6 other boats running around so that was a bust too. I’m not saying there are no moose in the zone, because there are, but it’s a tough hunt with a lot of competition. I’m zero for three on early season moose hunts, and I used to consider myself a pretty accomplished moose hunter before moving to the area 7 years ago.
My only advice would be shoot the first bull you see, because if you do see one consider yourself lucky. I’m saving my priority for another zone away from Fort McMurray, which I didn’t think I’d ever do.
