End of the day comes down to ammo costs IMO. I might shoot 100 rounds of pistol ammo at a range day, and its totally worth the extra cost for something a little more fun. 9mm and 38s have very little kick with target ammo. Hot 357s are a little snappy but wont scare you, just the little men shooting 22lr beside you wondering what the hell is making all the noise.
Haha first time I qualified with my ruger lcr in 357 for my back up gun, all the guys around me were shooting 22 mags 32acp and maybe a 380. Got alot of funny looks when that 2” barrel started spitting fire.

Nice. What calibres are they please

I Do got me a 4.2" bbl 44 mag S&W that's pretty darn nice too , damn accurate with all my handloads too - 240, 250s and 300s ...... trigger is really light which I'm a big fan ...... like it much better than the 5.5 " red hawk I had while ago

Ya I'd sure like a little snub nose 38 or so

.22 semi like a Ruger Mk II or III
Then a 9mm like a Browning Hi Power
Then a wheel gun like a 586 or 686 S&W.

Just buy one and shoot it, get some training if possible. Then buy more. You can't go wrong with an M&P9 or a Glock 17 for a first gun.

Sorta weird bringing up testicles into this.. go enjoy your 22lr pistol. Im sure its great for you. Life is too short to own boring things and a 22lr pistol is boring. At least get a 9mm or some sort of centerfire so you wont want to buy something bigger down the road. 9mm ammo really isnt that expensive.

Cant imagine how loud and the muzzle flash coming out of a snub nose.. Wish we could have them in canada.

I love .22 pistols, 9MM and 45 cal. but unfortunately, we dont live anywhere near a range and haven't renewed our memberships for this year. no sense in driving 125 klicks one way to a range where you pay through the nose just to belong.. time to rethink this whole pistol thing so we are selling the lot. Everything is sold including my M&P 9mm. The only pistol left is the SR9 that my wife owns and she wants to get rid of it. They were fun while this lasted..

But we do! A dwindling number of us can still possess and acquire snubbies.

I started with a .22 high standard Duramatic fun for the first few thousand rounds but I wanted more, I bought a S&W m-27.
I was already into handloading, brass was plentiful from the local police that were selling cheap 38 brass for charity. I started casting my own bullets from salvaged lead and 50/50 solder soon I was shooting big bullets for the same price as rimfire. Then came the 686 then the contender with .357, 30-30 barrels, Berretta 34 in .380 and many more after.

It all started with a .22

Why yes I can! It's not like a 12.3 or a 12.5. 12.6 prohibs can still be shot at the range like any restricted handgun.

Well first of all you need to tell the missus that $600 budget just ain't gonna cut it and you need $1500,then go get yourself a 9mm Sig 226 along with .22lr conversion kit, then you can justify the extra start up cost by explaining to her that the money you will save shooting .22lr most of the time instead of 9mm the pistol will pretty much pay for itself in the long run,"So ya see Hun,it's just like I got 2 free guns in one after 2 years of shooting,I'd be crazy to spend $600 on just one gun that's just gonna keep on costing and costing and costing to feed it.".......and that is called gun logic 101 for married guys.
Or just do like I do and buy wtf ever I want and she has no idea how many guns I even own nor what they cost....good thing!! 😜

Its true. If she says you can get a pistol, but sets a price range when she has no idea what her price range means, is setting you up to buy something you dont really want. If you have a green light with the wife to buy, but finances are not right, tell her you will wait and save because the pistol that you are interested in isnt within the $600.

How do you like your 22/45? I’m looking at buying one of the tactical models with a threaded barrel to throw a can on.

Can we just ban this guy please? I’m tired of him talking about stuff we can’t have. Sorry FT, I was staring at the threaded barrels on my 22/45 and 22 wmr rifle earlier knowing I will never get to use them and I’m still a little butthurt about it. Maybe I’ll put brakes on them or something.

Anyway I like a lot of things about my Mark 3 22/45 but the takedown / reassembly procedure is not one of them, total pita. You have to set the hammer strut just so and hold the pistol oriented just right when you close the mainspring or it gets jammed up and you have a pistol you can’t cycle or get apart again. Fixing it involves bashing it on a chunk of wood or smacking the bolt with something until the strut falls into place. The Mark 4 is a redesign that changes things significantly, get one of those.

Otherwise it’s a great pistol.

That's it I am moving to montana

Could just imagine a day at the range and all the great guns that would be there, show up etc....I would go broke.

Was mentioned before but a nice used Ruger Blackhawk convertible is a nice first handgun. It can shoot 38 special and .357 Magnum as well as 9mm ammo.

I started off as others have stated with a nice S&W .22 Revolver. After 2 boxes of ammo I was bored and wanted something more. I kept the revolver and picked up a used Ruger Blackhawk and shot it for a few years until I started to acquire more as the kids got older and the money loosed up a bit.

Cast my own and my Dillon 550 has probably seen close to 1/2 million rounds reloaded with it by now.

I love having a 12.6 and I have a few toys that I use every time I hit the range, makes a nice big smile on my face and usually people begging to shoot the Luger which is no problem at all. Just hope we get to keep them but the way things are going every time I hit the range I treat it like it is the last time I can shoot my 12.6's.

It's a great pistol , heavy barrel model . I put a few valquartsen parts on it now. only downside is take down and cleaning . I usually have to watch a youtube video to get back together .
