One day I hope to get a fancy front rest. Thanks for posting.

Well, I tried a few groups this morning and found it real tough to get used to using the joystick to position the reticle. It is set up so the reticle moves the same direction that you move the knob which I found confusing as it is the opposite that I do when using a fixed front rest. Then to complicate things, I used a 40X Leupold with fine crosshairs and could not dial out the mirage which was brutal. OK, enough for excuses, it is what it is and in spite of my whining, agg’d mid .3s. I am going to swap the scope out and get back to learning tomorrow.
Tips are welcome!!! In my set-up, I made sure the vertical reticle maintained windage on the recoil slide path. Used “moderate” shoulder pressure. I held the joystick during trigger release (not sure if that is best?).
I think I may need to make a rest adjustment to tune it to the weight of the rifle I am using?

Are you using a benchrest stock? You could try shooting it free recoil. Google "Shooting Free Recoil Techniques".

Yes, I tried the BR stock. I may try a free recoil group but think both the 30BR and 30 Dasher are a bit too lively. I am not running heavy barrels, but I do have one (a Krieger SBR) that I should turn on. Maybe I’ll do that tonight.

One area that is required to get this rest working well is the tension screws.
You need to set the tension so that the weight of the gun and it’s recoil does not cause it to settle.
To much tension makes it more difficult to return to POA after each shoot which slows down the running of a group in good conditions.
If the tension is to light you will likely see vertical in you groups.
If you do not have the instructions to set up the tension or do the occasional disassembly for cleaning and lubing let me know and I will email them to you.

Unlock the tension screws then turn them all the way in , back them
Off 1/16 of a turn and lock them there ,set the side tension on the front bag so there is tension on the stock ,it should have some drag as it recoils, relax your grip pressure on the joy stick when you break the shot, don’t pin the rifle with your shoulder if you can stand the recoil ,

Screwed on a heavy barrel and swapped scope out to a 6-18 so I could dial out mirage. It was a tad windy this AM but because my (still learning) manipulation of the joystick is pretty brutal, I ignored it and just aimed at the center of the bull ...and my second group snuck up on the .2’s. Some days the wind blows ‘em in

After 8 groups still working on a bit of vertical which I think is related to either my grip on the joystick or a tension setting on the saddle ... but I got it right once today . Mirage is also a bit of an issue on these hot days but quite manageable when turned down to 12X. Any other way to deal with it?

Try not to shoot in the dead calm and mirage will be less of an issue wait for some wind Vertical can be caused by a few things in The picture it looks like sight picture may have been a problem Could be rear bag to soft as well
not a grip problem if its the front bag it’s to hard or not enough drag

Figured I needed a proven performer for learning purposes so screwed on an HV barrel chambered to 6 Dasher.
Still struggling to figure out vertical. I shot this 10 shot group at 300M this AM. I watched the wind which was crossing between 200 - 300 M and obviously got it right with very little horizontal dispersion. But, the vertical bit me again. I did not realize until I started to pack up the rest that I did not set the bag squeeze to provide a bit of drag...which could account for the vertical string?

surprised the short range br guys have not solved your real problem with the rest yet,
Farley’s are known for having poor bags and this one is no exception
get a better bag or reform it, that will wash away some vertical, it currently looks like it was made for a stock, that looks like the rain has created ruts in the middle of the road

CB - the bag shown in the OP is for sporter forestocks... The original bag was probably never used and was replaced with the wide BR style Edgewood which I am currently using.

I can't see a forend stop on your rest in the picture. If the forend is not placed in the exact same spot on the rest every time it can induce vertical and other problems. Bag firmness also affects vertical, neither too hard or soft you have to experiment. Teflon tape on the forend or even baby powder on the bags can help make the stock slide consistently from shot to shot. Consistency in everything you do from one shot to the next is very important.

Well, here I am after spending a month “learning” about set-up, adjustment, hold and am starting to connect a few of the dots. I’ve shot 6 Dasher, 260 Rem, and now a trusty old 30BR barrel that I last shot about ten years ago. I’ve got some good individual groups (0.11 is the best) but my first goal is to shoot 4 consecutive groups under 0.3 ... and came close today until the wind got me and pushed the last group to 0.32. AARRHHH
No, I am not going to start using wind flags!

Looks good glad to see your getting the rest worked out but without flags your shooting blind , load development or competing at short range is a lottery without them , can’t hold for what you can’t see

Well, two months in and the sub 0.3 agg goal was re-set to sub 0.25 agg at 100M which is now in the bag ... baby steps coming up. Next goal is two groups in teens with none over 0.25.

260 Rem you could put on a clinic and school the majority of guys on this forum how to shoot groups.

Always learning myself and now focusing primarily on proper set-up to insure the rifle acts like it should when it goes bang.

Still having trouble breaking the 1” barrier for 10 shots at 300M. Keep getting caught by a breeze I can’t see.
