What's your thoughts?
I shot a buck back in September that came back positive with CWD. They called me within 2 weeks but I had quite a few questions for her. I didn't really know too much about CWD so she explained to me that it is a mutation of the protein in the brain that causes the issues. They are not sure how it is transferred, and in the area I shot my buck it jumped from 3% positive on mule bucks in 2015 to 13% in 2016.
They are expecting to see it as far west as Edmonton and Calgary within the next 5 years. I asked if they are looking at any counter measures or are they just planning on monitoring it. Because of the bad press they received over their last cull they are looking at other options to slow down the spread.
I was told that they are looking at ways to manipulate the harvest by potentially adding a Jan-Feb hunt, to target herds with a high positive percentage.
What's your thoughts on this approach? Do you think this is a good idea? Will this do more damage than good? To me it is no different than a cull but they are using sportsmen to do it so they don't get as many complaints as last time.
Let me know what you think.

I dunno what the answer is but the previous culls didn't stop the spread, I doubt more culls will do anything either. Culling is reactionary to a problem that already exists, seems by the time they get around to a cull it's too late and has already spread beyond the cull area.
How many heads are tested from western Alberta? It's probably there already.

Still sounds like a cull. Where has this action been successful in getting rid of CWD and not simply getting rid of all the deer?

well anytime you can transfer cwd through ingestion to one of our closest relatives you should be concerned. unfortunately we don't test on humans anymore
but even if there's a 1% chance i'm really not ok with that personally

CWD has been around for decades, they have just starting testing for it here the last 15 years or so, if you have been eating deer for decades you have most likely already ate some. If you have been eating male Mule Deer you have probably ate quite a bit.

Your question is valid.
No answer has been given .
Previous discussion on open forums wanted to point blame?
I believe an answer will present itself when the population needs it?
Until then follow the protocol that is present,,, and be happy don't worry!!
