For target groups, or big game? Mountain rifle or range bench?

A 3-9 would make a 500y deer appear as if it were 55yards away. Plenty big. The difficulty with shooting past your rifle max point blank range and extending to 500 yards is learning wind drift and knowing your holdover. A reticle with angle markings is a helpful aiming reference. Your other option is adjustable knobs. Depends how technical you want to make it.

3-3.5x minimum magnification for closer ranges, 10-15x maximum magnification is enough at 500 yards. If you go above 10x, you want adjustable parallax.

With good eyes I agree, if you are getting older Swaro Z5 3.5x18x44 BRH.

In that case sns should go with the 3.5 x 36 x 50

Don't kick a guy when he's down. I just had eye surgery last week. I may have to rig up a spotting scope on my gun now.

I hear Hubble has some new models you may wish to take a look at.

I’d look at a 4-12 optic in whatever brand fits your likes and budget and reticle choice.

Tell us a bit more about the build, please.

I have Z3's on my 308 and my 7mm. Love em.

The BRH (H is for "Heavy") works really well with people with degrading eyesight (I'm one of them) but I've heard some don't like the heavy line at long range. This didn't affect me on a whitetail at close to 400 yds this past November.

Best of luck.

Just installed a Z3 3-10x42 with 4A reticle last year before the season and love it. The reticle is so nice to use, draws your eye to the centre and nothing distracting about it. I don shoot long distances so no turret twisting for me.

I just picked up a vx5HD in a 3-25x44 with a cds dial. Might be something to look into. Not the lightest scope going so if weight matters there are better options available.

I see there is a zeiss diavari 2.5-10x50 for sale in the classifieds, you’ll be able to see hairs on a fly’s arse with one of those. I have a victory in the same power and it’s one of my all time favorite scopes.

When did Leupold start making a 3-25x44 scope?

Pretty sure he meant 3x15x44 because they don't make a 5x25, they do have 4x20x52. Probably had fat finger just like I do many days.

Glass quality is smth important to consider, not only magnification.
I can see with my Swaro scope dialed at x8 or x10 much better then my Vortex or Bushnell scopes dialed at x14 and x16.

Interesting piece in American Hunter, apparently Leupold will be running a promo, giving a Kestrel 5700 for free along with a Vx5HD purchase.
