It's called reciprocal treatment. European visitors to Canada have to apply for eTA since a couple of years. Don't be surprised that they treat Canadians the same.
They throw open the borders for any Tom Dick and Mohammed, but pose scrutiny on travelers? I just shake my head.
Tom Dick and Mohammed are running the show now. Not hard to figure out.
