Legit
Telus has been migrating all their e-mail customers over to Gmail for awhile now. There were some hiccups at first, pretty much painless now. The missus initiated our transfer mid-December, it took her less than 5 minutes work to migrate years worth of archives.
Some discussion about it here:

Be VERY careful because there are also scam versions of this. The one scam version says "Double your email storage for free". just click and follow this link. You will not like the outcome of that. NEVER follow links in emails, always got to the vendors secure site, make sure there is a padlock at the beginning of the web address and click on it to ensure it is actually Telus. Go direct from your browser and look for the info and links to follow there.

Just find it hard to believe my e-mail would be better/safer by involving Google.

Indeed...
My guess is that Telus decided that it would be cheaper and more efficient to have the Great Google bear the workload than have Telus host it internally. Telus has enough headaches of their own.

It was a major pain, it took the Telus rep about 15 minutes to set up my phone, and he had done dozens of them for customers by then. I took my laptops to my computer service people, and it took them an hour to do two laptops.

I'm scheduled for this change over next week, and I read through the other thread that urban rednek posted.... is there anyone out there this this actually went smoothly for, or should I just book aside a day and assume that there will be problems?

Telus e-mail changeover didn't work for me. I screwed it up on the first link. However, I had prepared for that and transferred everything in it to the Hotmail acct. I do get one hell of a lot less spam now, and just change accts that need the new e-mail as req'd, which is just a Google e-mail. Telus went to la-la land.
