Default Turkey vultures

I live between Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House in the country. We have recently found a dead deer on our property, probably road kill. Seen a turkey vulture on it this morning 100% sure it was a vulture. From the small bit of research I did it seems rare they come up this far north. Wondering if it's common this time of the year or if it's something others are encountering.

Default T vultures

Lots of them travel through in spring heading north! And again south in fall.
I’ve seen a few roosting in trees now an then for the past30 yrs and have seen larger groups on dead animals now an then in northern Alberta as well.
Seeing them on the ground is kind of humorous the way the walk or I’d say hop around. And they are truely ugly up close.
Don’t see them often which I’ve been told is because they soar very high up so a person wouldn’t notice them.... when they travel...

They've been pretty common on this side of the province for quite a few years now. With some even nesting locally.
Here's one I "shot" just north of my yard a few years back.

I’m in South East Manitoba, I never Noticed them until 2003, now I see them all the time.
When they are soaring I’d say they are beautiful, black with a grey “v” underneath.

I’ve seen them east of Innisfail and west of Bowden. There are some that nest near Heart Lake (north of Lac La Biche). Used to see them regularly along highway 881.

The first time you see one it's quite the jarring experience for sure.

Saw one today for the first time out east of Wimborne. It was eating gophers I had shot. Amazing looking bird.

Default Vultures

I have seen them on the Eastern side of the province for years and as far west as Carseland on the Bow. Another possibility would be a Golden or immature Bald Eagle as they are scavengers too.

We caught one a few years ago, over a wild boar for bait. It had a #3 soft catch on each ankle. Huge wing span. I put my coat over it and it remained quite calm while I removed the traps. We backed out slowly, returned an hour later and it was long gone. This was by Gibbons, so about 10 miles north of Edmonton. Also I saw one in a field by Legal about 15 years ago. My research also shows that they soar very high and can't be seen much.

We've got a resident population here in our ocean community as well.
Been here for the past two winters. Usually there's 2 or 3 buzzing around, but as many as 5 together at one time, were photographed ...last spring !
While graceful in the air, they sure are fugly up close...lol

The creature with one of the worst jobs in nature! Your sole purpose in life is to eat dead things from the rear end in...

I stopped raising pheasants west of Spruce Grove because of them Red Headed boys. Found three of them eyeing my pleasant pen about 4 years ago. After all the hawks , eagles, mink etc targeting them, turkey vultures was the last straw.

My son and I just spotted one today on some roadkill along Highway 16 just west of Stony Plain. Did a double take but it was definitely one of these fellows. That’s the first time I’ve seen one around here.

Actually saw 4 of them on 2 different road kill deer heading home from Missoula today. Ugly bird but kind of pretty in a way! Haven’t seen one for a couple months.

Found this one on the highway near Bashaw. Ben in Lethbridge did an awesome job mounting it for me. Told me as far as he knew it was the first one mounted in Canada. Had to reach out to some Taxidermist in the states for advice.

Growing up in SW Ontario, we had lots of them. Am surprised they are this far north. I hit one one time with the truck. Thought it was going to cave in the A pillar in my truck.

They nest in the cliffs along the river. common to see them soaring over the valley. Very abundant in Cuba , I found. Lots in southern Ontario now, weren't there when my wife was growing up.

I had 2 perched on poles in my yard last Friday.
I walked right up to the bottom of the poles to look at them.
They didnt fly away untill I waved my arms around.
It was creepy.
