Default Large ring mauser actions

For those that have more experience and understanding of the large ring mauser actions. Please educate me on
Which ones are the premium years and models. I like a commercial mauser large ring mauser action to start a new build. What would be some good, premium examples?
Cheers 360hunt

I really like the Santa Barbara actions that Parker Hale was using on their rifles with their triggers.

Default 98 mausers commercial

JC Higgins model 50 + 51 used FN actions and High Standard chrome lined barrels.Various Husqvarnas used both small and large ring mauser actions for their sporters. Also Parker Hale.

Like Cat said, the Parker Hale actions are excellent. If you are looking at commercial actions, the Husqvarna made commercial actions are also excellent quality and quite easy to come by. Current and actions back to after the war, Zastava are also excellent actions. The Yugoslavian made versions are particularity desirable. Also, hard to beat Bruno, CZ Mausers.

Thanks .... I had Chris Griesbach build it for me. It's my idea of a faux Rigby Stalker in 275 Rigby. I got tired of all the stainless and fiberglass in my safe and started going towards some more classic firearms.

Chris has the mate to it on his site.

Thanks for the info. A friend has a rifle already in the mail to him after you suggested him. Apparently very nice fellow. Now I just need to find the action for my build.
Cheers

Just looked at his site. He does some really nice work. Funny that I have never run across him before.

For a build involving some significant $ I would not use a zastava or parker hale personally. An early FN sporting rifle might be a pretty nice place to start if wanting a commercial action.

For one thing LH Mausers are very hard to come by, for a second thing, how closely have you looked at Zastava and PH actions. I have now built 3 LH stalking rifles using recently made Zastavas, including using the original wood stock heavily reshaped. The guys that have the other two are VERY happy with them. This is the 7x57 I kept. The bluing on the actions and barrels is hard to beat. A little stoning on the action and they are slick as wet ice.

The Interarms Mark X rifle were also built around a Mauser action.

The early models like mine were FN actions, later models were Zastava actions.

Interarms is one of those little know rifles that many assume are low quality firearms because they are unknown, but that is not the case.

They had a reputation among shooters who were familiar with them as a very reliable, accurate rifle.

For those reasons they are hard to find but have a low resale value if you can find one for sale.

After he retired he worked for Ralf for over 20 years in BC.

When he moved back to Alberta he set up shop in Three Hills.......

He is an excellent guy....

And excellent workmanship.

There are no end of different makes and models of large ring mausers out there, why don't you talk to your gunsmith to see what he prefers.

Default M98

I have much less expertise than most. I have 3 Voere M98 sporters and 2 FN98 deluxe rifles. The FN action is so much slicker in terms of bolt travel and I love that. The sporters have military actions and needed to function in battle, so I get that, but I prefer the "feel" of the FN.

Are the Parker Hale actions/barrels threaded the same as the M98's they're copied from?

I'm not sure if this applies to commercial PH but I had a stepped PH barrel that threaded into a Brazilian 98 receiver perfectly. I believe all "typical" (Siamese Mauser I would not consider typical) large ring Mausers are 1.10 inch x 12 tpi 55 degree pitch thread. One of the nice things about Mausers is that the different "Mauser" barrels usually fit easily, without the need to cut the chambers to headspace them correctly. However, if the barrel has sights, it may need to be clocked correctly (set back and chamber cut, etc.) or the sights will have to be moved.

Cat do you perhaps know if those were the same actions that Musgrave used in their K98 line?

I spoke with Echols about this a couple of years ago. I asked what he thought of a Zastava as the basis for a custom rifle. His reply was profound. He simply said: “run”. Lol.

I have a few Zastavas myself and can speak very very highly of them. Never had an issue and the fact that it has iron sights sold me on it.
