Default Fly fishing in these winter months

Hey fellas! I am looking to gather a little information about fly fishing during the winter. Any suggestions of decent spots to fish and what I should be using out there would be very much appreciated.

Also, I am not looking to drive too too far from Calgary if that's possible.

Thanks in advance!

Hit the Bow.

Plenty of guys fish that river year round when the weather isn't to cold.

i find on the bow this time of year they like sz 18 haresear nymphs and prince nymphs, fish them as close to bottom as you can, pattern your cast a few inches at a time, the fish this time of year are very slow, i find the warmest part of the day is when the bite is the most active

From Fish creek park down to Carsland. Be very careful of ice on the shore, not a fun thing to hit cold water this time of year slipping off the bergs. Also watch for ice chunks floating down, it can take you off your feet even in the shallows.

I'm in the same boat as you Dusty, i just pulled out my fly gear from the fall and have no idea what to do when it comes to winter nymphing. Send me a pm, we could head down to the river sometime.

We were very fortunate that admin gave us a flyfishing discussion category to better help us find the topics/info we want, without having to navigate through all fishing as only one category... We should use it!

Try the south end of the island in north fishcreek park,, plenty of room for a backcast not that you really need to get that far out. Go about 200 yards downstream from the southern tip of the island.

Bluey grey streamers are good too, slowly stripped in. no names as I make my own abonimations, so minnow pattern I guess.
