Electronics in hunting - ethical question
Last year I settled into a cool spot with the bow. It was a steep, 6 foot ditch, wth my back to the bedding area. Deer would come to the top of the ditch, then when satisfied, drop through the ditch and hesitate within 30 yards to recheck before moving on. Problem was I didn’t know when they approached, and several times when I went to peek, I ended up looking them face to face, or without warning, a deer would drop through with no time to draw. Heres the question, I have a couple of wireless cameras that I could setup to view the approach. I’d draw when they commit to crossing, ready for the spot they hesitate. Thoughts?

While not illegal, you have to ask yourself if you are comfortable with that.
I would go without cameras. The excitement and surprise is what keeps me hunting.

Do whatever is legal and floats your boat, but remember that cellular cameras take 15-20 seconds to get a picture to you under strong signal situations. It doesn't take a deer that long to cover 50 yards just walking.

Real time information.................flag on fishing line. Not that I have ever done this but I have thought about it in certain scenarios where it was possible to rig up.

If you follow B&C and P&Y it would be against what they deem as fair chase... but if you don’t subscribe to those ideas, it’s not illegal.

IMHO, the more gizmos and gadgets we use, the less of a 'Hunt' it is.
To each their own, I guess.

Next step would be motion alarm - to get you to put down your Kindle or your smart phone and get ready.

If I was hunting a meat buck I would do it, do what you need to do to get your food.
If I was trophy hunting, it wouldn’t feel like much of a trophy for me.

Are you a hunter...or a killer?
If you're having to put meat in the freezer for survival I'd say anything goes.
But if you're a sportsman...I'd say leave the electronics at home.

Maybe there's a better spot to set up, sometimes it just takes an ah hah moment to turn a hunting spot into a really good spot.

Do whatever YOU deem most enjoyable while staying within the law.
That is your final answer.
Do you believe it will enhance your enjoyment?

I have a spot similar to that and i went in with a shovel in the summer and carved out a spot for me, the deer encounters are close, 5-10 yds but its a rush

I often handi-cap myself by using my blackpowder in a general rifle zone - while using my fancy electronic rangefinder / bio combo. Go figure!

It's really not about ethics as this is personal to ones own belief...
Sounds like a ground blind would be the right answer as once your busted by a mature animal, well the game is pretty much over... Not to mention, drawing your bow in the location you describe would be tough.

I did the same thing. Dug Into the side of a knoll just by the landing spot. Had deer literally jumping over me. Couple of moose I could reach out and touch.

I would not do that personally, not even for a meat buck, although it's a fun idea to think about... The more practice hunting any animal under fair chase conditions will make you a much better hunter when the time comes to be a true "trophy hunter". I agree with others, I would build a ground blind, or use tree stand, or rethink your position. Most of my archery kills I am either stalking or still hunting so you should be able to kill deer there without using too much electronic advantage.

Ask yourself, "What do I want to get out of hunting? Is it the hunt, or to be able to kill at will?"

You asked an ethics question. This thread could go on for years.
What you are thinking of doing is legal.
Rock on.
Asking guys for their opinion on ethics is of no value. There is no right or wrong answer.
Some guys would jump the neighbours wife, but never would they use a trailcam....ethics?
If it helps you get your animal, do it.

From the description of the location, this spot might not be so cool.
That doesn't mean it couldn't be a satisfying place to learn how to hunt it.
Beyond ethics and legality, one should consider the soul of the hunt.
While you are hunting, do you want to be focused on your phone, Waiting for the buzz of a text?
Is this really what you want a hunt to be about?
You asked for thoughts, likely with a purpose.
I won't brush off your question as worthless.
I think the camera idea is terrible.
Spend more time learning how to hunt the area without added technology.
The secrets to success will reveal themselves if you deserve it.
And those steaks will taste SO Much better....
Mixing wives being jumped and trail cameras.... is there is something darker going on here that belongs in the general forum....?

Personally, I don't know where you draw the line. Technology has always changed hunting practices. Smokeless powder, centerfire cartridges, expanding bullets, semi-auto shotguns, compound bows. Though now the technological changes are seeming to come much faster.
I know for myself, the most satisfying big game hunts are the ones I have to work for the hardest. That eliminates much of the whiz-bang toys from the equation. Gimme a rifle, a comfy pair of boots, a cool autumn day to enjoy and an animal to walk my way. And then my cell phone to call my young friends to haul the dang thing out. Without the cell phone I am shagged right up, as I just love watching those younger fellers shove their hand up and cut around a moose's arse.
I guess we all need a little techno whiz-bang

Trophy or not I do not use trail cams .
The only electronics I use are a range finder ( which I honestly could do without ) and allocator collar on my son's GSP to find him in thick cover when he is on point .
I do have I hunter on my phone but prefer to use current county maps .

. Why would anyone shove their hand up a moose's arse?
