Everyone man and their dog should use a "hoochie mama" !
That way when I hit the bush I will sound different than 99% of the guys and I might have a shot at calling one in

Try to use a call that no one else uses not to big and gruff sounding. They are usually call shy and easily intimidated. Not always but a lot of the time. Put up a poll of 10 bugles and 10 cow calls and pick the least used.

Best call is going to depend on the situation and the mood the bull is in...... Buy and get proficent with several for the best chance at getting a bull.

Diaphram and knowing not so much how to use it but rather when to use it. That being said, you dont want to sound like a cat in the fan belt either.

blue carlton diaphragm call and a chunk of vacuum cleaner hose (or the fancy store bought tube if you like). Can do everything with it bugle, grunt, chuckle, and mew. Not over bearing if you use it to bugle.
If you have trouble with the bare diaphragm gagging you try a Berry Thunder Bugle and get a Hootchie Mamma as recommended earlier.
I personally have not had a lot of luck with the HM, but it sounds pretty Elky.

X2, I use a hoochie and 2 bugles, a Rocky Jakobson and a primos. The sound of the bugle isn't as important as the timing. A friend of mine made a call last year that literally made another friend and I roll over laughing, but a few minutes later we had a bull come charging in.

and that's true, which is why I don't. Buglingbull.com
But truthfully, the best elk call is :
the right sound for the situation, not the perfect sound.

I have 1 bugle, one call that can go between cow chirps and a bugle, then on top of that I have 3 other cow calls and gonna be picking up a sceery right away to add to my cow calls. How does the saying go, dont put all your eggs in one basket??

I use bugling bull diaphragms. I have 4 different diaphragms for different scenarios. My bugle tube is simply a 2" core line plumbing tube. It has been working for me ever since I started elk hunting.

Good advice right there.
I always equate the "hoochie mama" to a nagging wife....always the same type of sound over and over....sooner or later you tune it out and run the other way

The only time I use a hoochie mama is when I'm walking to my hunting spot I'll use both a diaphragm and a hoochie mama, there both two different sounds and makes it sound as if there's a few cows communicating together.

My boys... They can do phenomenal bugles and mews with just their voices!
...gonna be sad to see them lose that ability when they grow up... :'(
