Default Lake Minnewanka opens tomorrow, May 18th

Hi,

Never fished Minnewanka before, or even seen it in person. Looks like one of the most beautiful lakes in the province.

Looks like I'd need to pickup a daily national parks fishing license, no big deal.

Question is, anyone know if the ice is gone? We'd be fishing from shore. Is the shore fishing decent? is fishing good at all here?

Thanks!

Let us know how your boat worked on the ice

I am pretty sure it is still iced over.

Shore fishing will likely not yield much results. Even if it wasnt still frozen.

Cannot say I have ever seen anyone catch much from shore.

Saw one guy hook into some whites on the opposite side of the boat launch a few years back.

There is a campground down the lake, foot access, about an hours walk (been awhile, so don't quote me), use to fish from shore there and did quite well. That was the good ol days when you could use smelts in the lake.

chuck a big white or pink swimbait from the rockdam towards the submerged old dam and you will do fine. nice big old wooden plug will do you good too.

Yup.
I watched a couple chaps land quite a few one time; they were chucking big ol' Buzz Bombs from shore & doing way better than we were from a boat!

It can be good this time of year off the dam, white jigs with white twister tails, single or double tails, read the regs you will most likely be checked for lead & bait.

Those were most likely the outfitters. They launch down at the end of the main docks. We minions are not allowed that access.

Boat launch should open up by the weekend I am hoping

Yes the water level is way down and so is the trip down the boat launch. Never the less fishing as sight see was excellent last weekend.
