Default DNA evidence

Interesting read and more than a bit frightening.

Not only this, video editing has gotten terrifyingly realistic. Your face can be edited onto another body and it can look perfect.

It's way worse than that. Google deep fakes.

or watch this - https://youtu.be/cQ54GDm1eL0

The technology is brand new and just getting developed and it's almost already perfect. Basically, someone taught AI how to make video edits in real time. Scary stuff.

Advances in DNA are almost like science fiction

Snapshot is a revolutionary new forensic DNA analysis service that accurately predicts the physical appearance and ancestry of an unknown person from DNA. It can also determine kinship between DNA samples out to six degrees of relatedness. Snapshot is ideal for generating investigative leads, narrowing suspect lists, and solving human remains cases.
Starting with extracted DNA or biological evidence from your case, we will produce a detailed Snapshot report and composite sketch that includes eye color, skin color, hair color, face morphology, and detailed biogeographic ancestry.

Interesting read.

I think this goes to show that nothing is fool proof, even DNA. Everything must be corroborated and backed up to ensure proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

unlock your smart phone or computer with a swipe of finger or thumb has given somebody a data base of at least 1 of many peoples finger prints.

I've read of some of the issues with those various DNA companies that offer testing for peoples curiosities about their heritage, but those companies also sell their data to all manner of companies such as pharmaceutical giants, etc. They apparently clear peoples names and telltale ID from it but an article I read indicated that some researchers were able to figure out whose DNA they had the profile of without great difficulty. I'm curious about it, but not enough to risk the negatives. A half-sister of mine has though, and that's what is creepy and insidious about DNA tracking: your information can be traced without your even having submitted anything...... Imagine being denied health insurance based on your genetic markers? Imagine your children and entire subsequent genetic chain experiencing fallout from your entering their DNA into these companies computers.

Some aspects do seem cool though, picture the police having DNA from a serial killer rapist and entering it into one of these databases and finding a bunch of cousins and relatives of theirs with which to track down their suspect from? Or that same type of DNA-derived digital image on a wanted poster as bat119 posted?

Big Brother indeed. And in perpetuity no less .

The thing that frightens me about this isn't the idea of someone intentionally framing me for something (and that is a sobering enough thought) but the idea that I could be accused of a crime because my DNA went on 'walk about' without me knowing about it.

If the police have your DNA on file (or have access to it via an 'information broker') you could be accused of a crime that you didn't commit and unless you have a very convincing alibi, you could be on death row (well, not here, we are too enlightened for that sort of thing).

This is some of the information about number of loci used when comparing DNA. The acceptable number of matches used in Canada was 9 loci. I believe that has been changed to 13 loci to provide less risk of false matches. Canada still has people in jail who were convicted on 9 point matches. The following is a quote from an education site and if people are interested they can google Arizona 9 point matches. What is interesting is that one of the matches at 9 loci showed that a person with black skin was a match with a person with white skin.

"The official calculation for a random match if nine CODIS STRs are used is 1 in 754 million in Caucasians. Nevertheless, it was reported that as many as 90 random matches had been made in the relatively small Arizona DNA database, which has 65 493 DNA profiles"

A couple of ways DNA could wind up places, one is a memory from a movie where Alicia Silverstones character planted some seeds of mistrust in the male object of her affection by giving him the idea that his girlfriend might have caught an STD. She then went through his trash, retrieved some discarded DNA in a convenient latex tube and then planted 'evidence' of a sexual assault on herself, despite the fact the guy did no such thing (movie was called The Crush, never let a psycho chick watch it as it might serve as inspiration. Its a horror movie to every guy watching it)

Mere moments ago another idea came to mind while scanning CGN, someone grew their hair long to donate to be made into wigs for cancer patients and they posted photos of their bundled locks about to be donated. Imagine if that recovering cancer patient was a killer or sex offender, etc and was leaving wig hair all over crime scenes, meanwhile the hair donors siblings recently participated in Ancestry DNA.....?

What an extraordinary story. Thank you.

I extrapolate that this cross-cross-cross-transfer of DNA can lead to another technology in the near future: The ability to sample from a person, and extrapolate who they may have been in recent contact with, and who their contacts have been in contact with. A contact-map can be built, and adjusted for confidences and errors.
