Default 7/08 ai

I remember one of you fellas had one done up last year. Was it Rack?? Just wondering how you like it and what you were able to get it to do velocity wise.

The only thing AI'ing a 7-08 will do is give you a cartridge that is harder to feed smoothly. If it is velocity gain you are looking for this is not the cartridge to do it with. I get 2980fps with my 7-08 with lapua brass, 140 TSX, with no pressure signs. I have not seen ackleying the 7-08 get much over 3000fps with a 140 grain bullet...

Yes....I have a 7-08AI

I built it with the idea of just having something slightly different and wanting to play around a bit. It feeds 100% as good as the standard 7-08 and I shoot both 7-08 and 7-08AI out of it depending on the mood of the day.

I dont push my velocity at all as I found my greatest accuracy was right around the 2950fps mark anyways.....after that I had no pressure signs but the sweet spot for this rifle is right around there.....

Case life is great, trimming is minimal, and other than that there is 'zero' practical reason to build a 7-08AI really. Then again, if I did everything practical, life would be no fun at all.

So yes, for velocity gain its not worth it as the .308 family doesnt give you much 'gain' with the Ackley. A 280AI sure does sound like a fun project one day down the road though.....

Thanks Rack,
I am either thinking of the 7/08AI or a 260 AI. It is mainly for the same reasons as you have stated. I would like to have something different. Either way it will be a short action that I am getting. I don't really know why I all of a sudden have this desire to get something built but I can't seem to shake it. Well then maybe I'm not really trying too hard to shake it either.

Thats about the same reason I had mine built.....and I wouldnt trade it for anything right now. It feeds smooth, it shoots amazing, kills anything I'll need to shoot in Alberta quite well.....and its kinda cool to have something a bit original stamped on your barrel....

I need to get out and shoot it period. I still haven't done that yet. I still haven't shot my new 870 either. 7mm are cool and the shorter the better. The .284 is the original Short Mag. 140grs at 3000fps in a short action, oh yea.

I was just going to come on here and give a little praise to the .284 Win. Like said, the original short fat 7mm that should have sold like hot cakes but was poorly marketed.

Rackmastr,

Did you notice a significant difference in accuracy when shooting standard 7-08 cartridges after doing the AI job on it?

I did an "AI" job on a sow one time and she had 13 piglets. I had no trouble feeding her or the piglets.

After that she always smiled and winked at me when she was in heat.

Nice job. When one enjoys his job and shows it, he is rewarded with..................more work.

No not at all actually. I can still shoot factory 7-08 stuff easily under an inch.

I usually buy some Federal Fusion for plinking and what-not and it shoots under MOA while fire-forming......no issues at all there.

As soon as i typed that I was expecting to see one of these responses. All too familiar with the agricultural definition of "AI". Did the piglets all wear blue and white checkered coats and glasses like their Dad?

That's good... makes it even more versatile.
