Default Where are the ducks

Used to be in spring there was ducks in EVERY slough and beaver dam, now just a very few. I think the ravens are eating eggs and chicks to the point that they are depleting the population, Ravens don`t eat goose eggs because the gander is big enough to offer protection, not like ducks where only the hen raises the ducklings.

I've been flushing ducks out under trees when out for a walk in the neighbourhood for 2 weeks now. Male mallards chasing hens all over.

Tons of ducks in the south west. Mallards , canvas backs, shovlers, etc. Water is starting to open up quick now down here.

Around Lacombe there isn’t a puddle or pond that doesn’t have ducks in it. Don’t recall ever seeing so many. Mostly beautiful drake mallards

Antlercarver if you think the ravens can’t get eggs away from the geese your misinformed. I was part of a research project and saw first hand ravens steal geese eggs. Not just one or two but lots, and on a daily basis.

I was reading something a few months back about coots being predatory on other ducks nests and eggs, can't remember who put out the article. That was what they claimed they found out anyway. Surprised them as well.

I think you may be correct. After the snow goes and the puddles dry up I have no geese but I often find goose egg shells. About the only local bird I think large enough to carry an egg are Ravens. I am about 6 miles from the nearest golf course but from time to time I find golf balls out in my field.

It took a while after the snow went, but now I am seeing birds on all the puddles. Mostly Mallards and Shovelers.

Pincher Creek to Lethbridge, every puddle and slough has ducks in it. They were just late this year.
