Default Frogs are croaking!

I didn't think I'd be hearing them till June this year.

I heard them on the weekend.
Surprising with the amount of ice on the dugout.

Ya I was surprised. Also saw my first mosquito today. Good with the bad. I'm just glad spring is here.

I was surprised some years ago (though I shouldn't have been) to find out that all the insects we see early in the year are survivors from last year. I don't know where I thought they came from... It always fascinates me to see bugs flying on a -2 day January in northern Alberta. Resilient buggers.

Last night I was covering up the smoker, and heard the frogs too... I pulled IncrediGirl out onto the deck and said, "Listen!"

She smiled - IncrediGirl loves the sounds of Spring.

You would not believe the amount of "snow spiders" I've seen in the last two weeks.

Flies, moths and mosquitoes have all been spotted as well. Don't know how 6 months of -35 didn't kill them all off.

I've been observing wood frogs and boreal chorus frogs in the springtime for years. It is amazing that there can still be snow in places in the bush and the small 'ponds' of snow meltwater in the bush will be teaming with life. I sat down and was still for a 1/2 hour beside a bush puddle and the within eyesight, without turning my head, I could have counted a few hundred frogs. There were dozens of frogs piggybacking each other in rows. The chirping sounds sounded like aliens in stereo and was hypnotic. Wood frogs breed from early April until mid June so I imagine the puddles will be busy because this spring was a week or two late. The boreal chorus frog isn't as easy to watch but they are there.

Not hear yet, got lots of wetlands around me but the cold nights got them hunkered down still, soon though, love the evenings with the windows open and the sounds of the woods.
