I've had a can of bear spray on my belt for 3 years that i ave never had to use(thankfully). Anyone know if it would still be good or should i buy a new can?

There's usually a sticker that has a best before date. I always buy a new one every year regardless. Small investment that could save your life.

Plus, the old cans are good to learn with.

Just make sure you have a tailwind first, though.

And don't test them in your backyard.

Or just before going for a drive.

Good opportunity to use bear spray! I never trust them after the expiry date and then save the can for myself to practice with or for someone who has never used bear spray to practice. Get a new can and use the old one!

Generally, they have a shelf life of about 1.5 years. But check the expiry date.

Replace for sure! I've had one since 2008 and I really need to replace it.

I have a friend in government that is issued new spray every year. They practice using the outdated ones and several invariably fail!

I read somewhere that the product itself stays fairly potent after the use-by-date but it's the spraying agent that starts to fail and be less active. Might still work but not go far enough, not worth the risk to my mind.

Default Bear spray

I always carry two cans as the F&W guy pointed out to me if you do need to use it and have a 2 mile walk back to your car, it's along walk back with an empty can knowing there is an angry bear around.
