Anyone know a Trapper in the Lac La Biche area with the last name Cloutier or Coulter (something like that)? I heard from a fella that he has it bad and is terribly sick. It started in his liver and is now in his lungs too.

Pretty scary, this lady has no idea where she would of got it from. Imagine how many trappers have it and have no idea.

Especially knowing this from the article:

"Symptoms can take up to 15 years to appear"

If i get it, first thing im doing is ivomec. If that doesnt work i want to try the 100 proof alcohol injection into the cyst method... long before they start hacking my liver and giving you a lethal dose of drugs.

But thats just me...

If we consider that a person can get it from contact with fecis from infected animals then anyone that has contact with a domestic dog that has run on a nature trail and rolled in it or eaten can become infected ..this problem isnt limited to us as hunters and trappers ,the general public is at risk as well . Campers , joggers , hikers ..you name it .

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that the disease hasn't progressed to the point where it is not curable/treatable anymore. Was your Dad a Trapper?

Very sorry to hear it man, any idea how many years he’s had it? Progressed like that definitely for the medical community only to treat.

Guy in south here cysts appear dead, but the big question is are they just long term dormant??? He did/does work cattle, and he also worked with ivomec annually. I used the stuff when i was 20, got my arms covered with it. But not necessarily nice stuff, think people can react to it too, think it didnt agree with same guys mother.

Yes Cam the ivomec you treat cattle with is what i am speculating on. If it was truly dangerous to people im sure it wouldnt be freely available on the market.

Ivermectin is the medicine for killing some types of parasites in humans. Apparently very popular in many areas of the world.

Very sorry to read about Mugeye's father suffering. And tapeworms in the others is just as tragic.

People are so strong but so vulnerable. A healthy friend got a flesh eating bacteria in a scratch on his leg while out hiking a trail. Almost got him and he is still recovering after 2 years.

Here is the link to the story about the woman who had major surgery last November to remove the cysts.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmon...erta-1.5436828

She was initially diagnosed with cancer and given only a few more years to live; they found out it was actually cysts from a parasite during the surgery. Excerpt:
Quote:
Her cancer surgery was the equivalent of an open-heart operation. Surgeons removed her gallbladder, 65 per cent of her liver and cut several nodes off her lungs, in addition to scraping the cyst off her diaphragm. She has a 14-inch, L-shaped scar on her chest that is still not completely closed, two months after surgery.

Sorry to hear Mug.
The nodules may appear dead for a very long time and then become active. I think the medical community is more aware of it now so let your doctor know that you spend time trapping, hunting, hiking, berry picking, petting your dog just about anything.

I guess one of the reasons for this to be more frequent these days, is the ever increasing population of urban coyotes.

Valerius Geist, probably the best biologist to ever step foot in Alberta. Every biologist in the province should read his books, instead of pretending they know better.

Sorry to hear that. The link in the original post won’t open for me but didn’t they save that women’s life by cutting out the cysts on multiple organs? Hopefully this option is available for your Dad. I wish him well.
