If a 308 won't kill it...it shouldn't be dead.

Sticking to my guns
I'm sticking to my guns!
Mine being 375 HH, and 358 norma, with a bastard 9.3x62 currently in the works. Never too big for all these mammoth Alberta critters. Go big or Go HOme! (Actually with the 375 or the 9.3, I can pretty much make a go of it anywhere around the globe. I'm ready boys, bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

If I were in the same boat as you I think I would lean to a 7MM Rem Mag. The 270 will absolutely do the job, I love my 270, my son shoots it now. But why not try something new? To me prairie hunting, thinking about stretching things out, thinking of trying something new... The 7 seems to fit the bill very well.
Good luck.

Have you considered the 270WSM?
With a 130 grain factory load its within 20 fps of a 120grain 257 Wby. 3300fps
With a 150 grain factory load its the same as the 7mm Rem Mag. 3100fps
Its available in a lot of different rifles, mine happens to be a Tikka T3 Hunter. Its taken WT, Mule, Elk, and Moose. It replaced a Rem 700 in 7mm RM, I also have a 257 Wby and a 300 Wby.
Oddly the 270WSM goes along as a backup and often gets the animal. Its a pleasure to carry and to shoot.
Good luck with your quest I've been trying to pare down to 1 for the last 10 years.

I love the 12 Gauge shotgun, loaded with the correct ammunition for the quarry at hand and within its effective range (I prefer well under 100 yards if possible but will stretch to that distance if I feel for it).
I know it's not a rifle but it is just my passion and my way at this time. Very happy to be living in a jurisdiction that allows its use for Big Game. Not sure I'll be out this coming season for the aforementioned Big Game, yet next time I go I shall take this. I am not saying it's a world-beater, just what I feel for these days and have been about for years. I LOVE getting close to the wild. Think of it like Bowhunting but with a firearm and perhaps you'll get where I'm at.
Obviously for putting meat in the freezer and/or bagging the trophy of a lifetime all your choices offer greater odds of success as the range offered by these centerfire rifles is many times that of the shotgun firing (a) large projectile(s). None the less and truth be told, I'd even take the 12 out on the once in a lifetime Goat draw if I was picked for said Special License and do my best to get as close as possible. I know many will think I'm strange or downright loopy for this yet the way I see it, if I can't get it done my way I don't deserve that Goat (or whatever the Species I have a tag for may be). If I can't do it ethically, I will happily let the animal wander off and be pleased just to have had that moment in the wilderness in that animals presence.

Do you still have the .270? If you do and if it were me I'd be looking at a few different calibres, mainly a .243, 2506, 7mm 08, or something in 6.5 like the 6.5x55. Reason I say that is you could always grab the 270 on years when you get drawn for elk or moose, and on years you don't you could use the smaller calibres. Which in turn would make it easier to shoot off hand due to the reduced recoil, and that could come in handy if your taking a 300 yard shot out over the prairie without something to lean on. Also gives you a gun if you want to go varmint hunting or get into target shooting. In saying that if you don't still have a 270 win and you liked the cartridge just go get another one. The 270 is more then enough gun for anything in alberta and you can find ammo anywhere.
