Default Finding / Picking Wild Blueberries in Alberta

Having alot of Family in Northern Ontario, I've always picked blueberries in August when visiting that province and enjoyed it.

I know they grow in Alberta, primarily in Central and Northern Alberta. How come they don't grow in the rocky mountains?

Would anyone be willing to share some areas in Central Alberta where there are great blueberry patches? I've never found / picked them in Alberta.

Thanks in Advance

I've never seen many blueberries in the south, go around bonnyville cold lake etc. And you'll get lots.

Never seen blueberries here. Saskatoons are their ugly sisters and they're everywhere.

You can find them in the castle mountain area, in southern Alberta!

Default huckleberries

No blueberries in Castle creek area. I think you saw huckleberries. They had their huckleberry festival 2 weeks ago at West Castle ski resort. I am interested in Oregon grapes that you saw.

I picked a whole bucket in twenty minutes north of Fort McMurray on Monday. One area we were in was covered.

I was up on Barnaby ridge and came across some wild blueberries, I took some pics, haven't figured out how to post them, boy were they delicious. If you are in the beavermines area, there is a lot of what appears to be Oregon grapes, I'm out there quite often, and have never seen so many, but from the literature I have read, production veries from year to year! There was also a lot of huckle berries!

Alberta proper has it made...

Back home we got black flies, skeeters, copperheads and a whole lot of horseflies. Then the ant nests on the bog when running for the bakeapple patches. More than once I ended up streaking near bare arse back to the car after falling face first into an ant nest. LOL

The only places in Alberta that I have experienced black flies like in nfld was up in wabasca. Very similar terrain I guess, kind of boggy. I didn't find it to bad, if you keep moving you're usually OK, the big swarm around your head stays that, a big swarm around your head but no bites. The guy I was working with was from Lethbridge and he was losing his mind lol

Thanks for the replies.

Searched out old thread's and it seems like there is a bunch near Bonnyville, Cold Lake, & Bellis.

Coming from Calgary, I think I will scout out Bellis early next week.
I think I missed the picking window this year, but if I can find the plants, I'll be in good shape for next year.

I wonder how the forest fires up near Fort. Mac will affect the berries in the upcoming years. Maybe more will sprout up with all of the trees and brush being burnt to the ground

If anyone else has any information they would like to share with me publicly or PM that would be appreciated.

And yes, I would get eaten alive by Black Flies in Northern Ontario. Terrace Bay / Schreiber Area. Great fishing there, but the bugs can be brutal.
