Default New puppy

I wasn't going to post about this. But with all the posts about losing family pets, I thought it would be a nice change.

A couple of short years ago we had to put down our big dog Woody. He was a Husky/Lab, and I'd have to say he was a big SOB. There's a big chunk of our family missing since he's been gone. He was 14 years old.

The boss liked the idea of getting another big dog. We do lots of outdoorsy stuff so we needed something not so fragile.

We've been dealing with the breeder for about a year now. And 3 weeks ago he was finally ready for us to go pick him up.

In the 3 weeks we've had him, he's just about exactly doubled in weight.

Do you guys and gals have any additions to your family? I'll tell ya it's like having another baby lol.

That's a good looking pup you got there Savage. You may have to sell a Python or two to feed it though, he gonna be a cranker!

Thanks TC.

We'll hopefully if he keeps eating the boss's nice couch, and our boy's toys, it won't come to that.

Cute little guy. Rottie? Have you started training him yet? I know a bunch of people that say they dont' start training a dog till he's a year old. I find that absolute lunacy. I start working with the dog the day I get him.

Yep that's exactly what he is.

So far he can come, lay down, shake a paw, fetches his toys and brings them back, go in his kennel, off, leave it(drop whats in his mouth) stay( I dont teach stay, but he keeps sitting, or laying down until i tell him he's free) won't eat his meat supper until i let him, and I'm starting to teach him "center" where he walks behind me and comes through and sits between my legs. All one word commands with hand signs.

Now he has a severe case of ADHD so he leaves me hangin a lot lol. Training is a short 5 minutes or so. And he's no professional, but he's a little smartie pants.

I see people with Rottweilers that have to give them up because they're out of control. We're doing our best to stay on top of it. We socialize him with everyone we can, and in another month when he's had all of his shots, we'll start introducing him to other dogs.

His main purpose is a family dog so he needs to be able to compose himself.

Does he do the thing where you tell him to shake a paw, and both paws come up?

They learn. I've done all that with my new pup that I got at 4 months old. (still looking for a new home for him). I have mine leaving his food while eating with the 'leave it' command. It taught mine sit from both laying and standing. I taught mine 'place' which means to go to his bed. I don't have a kennel for mine.

I'm doing just his left, then he'll learn the other one. Then both like you said. I don't want him to be a circus dog, but I want him to know a ton of commands.

He's a little bugger to be honest. Loves the outdoors so far. He's pretty well behaved when he's outside. And turns into a monster in the house.
