Default Honing barrels ..

.. a relatively new procedure in modern barrel making. It seems to be an older technology, now being incorporated by modern barrel makers.. not to be confused with lapping. How it relates to cut or button rifling, I'm not sure but likely to both methods.

Whether all the major manufacturers are all using this procedure now, or just a few, remains a bit of a mystery. Anybody know for sure ?

Everyone of these manufacturers have a phone number and someone will to talk. They will know for sure. But I’d be willing to bet that more do than don’t

That could be the case, but I know for sure that when Savage incorporated
honing in to their barrel mfg procedure, they didn't utter a word. It was the best kept secret in the industry that caught every one of their competitors off guard. When a gunmaker suddenly introduces an amazingly accurate, low price point rifle I had to research the tool makers to find out what they might be doing.. a few yeas ago, and sure enough, Sunnen listed Savage as on of their barrel honing customers.

I agree that most use it now but no one seems to be talking about it.

So, just so I understand, honing has been done before the hammer forging process for some time?

I never stated that the technology was new ..just the application . current production barrels - not hammer forged What's your point? Tell me, when did you first hear about barrel honing ?

Long before today.

Many of the big manufacturers hammer forge and they have for a long time.

Who made the first production hammer forged barrel in N America ?

I have no intention of arguing with you Chuck. I put this up because I thought a lot of people might find it interesting.. maybe not. But seeing as you've had the subject covered for years, that's great. Now you can let it go, Fair enough?

It’s been happening in the US since the sixties. Remington was one of the first.

TRW was the first, but I doubt many know who that is.

You sure that wasn't power lapping .. after the rifling was done ?

I’m talking about hammer forging. Your article states that honing is part of that process. So if that is truly the case, then TRW was doing it in the sixties

This isn't about hammer forging.. it's about modern cut or button rifled barrels.
Honing was an integral part of the hammer forging process but I"m
sure it was after the rifling was forged. Not much point in doing it prior to that.

More like a power lap than what is now referred to as bore honing.
