Default Range results from yesterday.

I made it to the range yesterday.
Surprisingly I had the place to myself.

The line up was these rifles.

Left to right, top to bottom:

Marlin 1895G, 45/70(smokin CT deal)
LH 700 SPS Varmint, .243Win.
LH 700 VLS (HS stock) .22-250.
M1917, w/ Shultz&Larson 1 in 14 .308Win, Prone Culbertson stock.
LH 788, .260Rem, custom MCRS stock.

I tried my first hand loads with the 45/70, 300 gr. Sierra’s with Benchmark and IMR 3031, and at 100 yds with a heavy duplex 4 power, I was managing 1” to 1.5”, 3 shot groups (somehow I lost the pics on my phone) recoil from the bench wasn’t all that bad, but I gotta get an oversized lever for this rifle as I was smashing up my middle finger pretty bad.

The .243, and .22-250 were pretty much ran on steel exclusively, and the 4” gong at 392(yes that is a weird distance) was hit far more than it was missed.

My Palma/ FTR rig (M1917) is pretty much my go to for accuracy rig. Sporting a 8-32x Sightrom III with a 1/4moa dot reticle, it’s more or less a dial it at send it interface(at least to 392)
Heres 4 hits on the 4” gong at 392:

(The hits off the square we’re not painted and aren’t from my .308)

Lastly I was quite surprised with the .260. I was mostly fire forming virgin brass with it yesterday, but as the results at 200 & 300 showed decent results, I decided to take it out to 392, and well I’m a bit shocked as to how well things came together. There was a bit of a lateral 60 degree to the right wind, and with no flags I just shot it, as when the poplar fluff looked to be not moving very much.

That’s about 1.75” Center to Center for 5 shots!(0.44MOA)

Some days you are defiantly the windshield!

Sounds like you had some good fun.

As to the Marlin, the large loop lever is fairly expensive and won't usually fix the recoil issue you are having. A few things that will help, deepen the checkering near the lever so your third and fourth fingers get a better grip. I know this sounds counter intuitive but adjust your grip so that your second finger is right up against the lever, no running start room, tighten the grip on your left hand slightly and wrap the front edge of the lever with soft leather or wear a three fingered glove for bench work.

Aren’t you supposed to hit that black diamond in the center of the orange? Just kidding. Nice shooting.

Yup, and a variable ~10 k breeze from left to right put those pills right there. Not shooting for score anyways , just seeing what I could get for a group.
FWIW you don’t wanna obliterate your aiming point either.

Nice shooting Dick!
If I ever catch up around here, maybe I’ll get some shooting in too

Nice work there Dick ... that is a fancy shmancy stock on the 260R ... I assume that stuff on the bottom is designed to fit wide plate that will fit in a BR style saddle?

Ah heck, I ain’t got no saddles, I just ordered what looked and felt good to me. And finding an aftermarket stock for a lefty 788, that wasn’t a task for the faint of heart either.

I dabble, from the bench, but I don’t play from there.

This rifle was built because I had the action doing nothing, after having built a .260 for the Pit Boss, I liked the cartridge so much I decided that would be what I’d build.

It’s a purpose built longish range deer stand rifle. It just happens to shoot pretty darn good.

Nice to see most of the bolts on the proper side of the rifle!

Where did you find the lefty 788 stock?
I'd like to put something like that on my lefty 6mm.

Call MCRS Tactical in Calgary, and get one built like I did.

I will add that for bench rest shooting I just don't have my hand in the lever at all. I grip the bottom of the lever with my hand and just my finger is in the trigger housing part and my thumb on my right hand is beside the stock . Feels weird at first but no bashing is involved and once you get used to it no flinching or worrying about it helps. Mind you I have a hand like a gorilla which you probably have also since the lever is causing some pain.

It sure is nice when you have the range to yourself, sunny and no wind.
