I made it to the range yesterday.
Surprisingly I had the place to myself.
The line up was these rifles.
Left to right, top to bottom:
Marlin 1895G, 45/70(smokin CT deal)
LH 700 SPS Varmint, .243Win.
LH 700 VLS (HS stock) .22-250.
M1917, w/ Shultz&Larson 1 in 14 .308Win, Prone Culbertson stock.
LH 788, .260Rem, custom MCRS stock.
I tried my first hand loads with the 45/70, 300 gr. Sierra’s with Benchmark and IMR 3031, and at 100 yds with a heavy duplex 4 power, I was managing 1” to 1.5”, 3 shot groups (somehow I lost the pics on my phone) recoil from the bench wasn’t all that bad, but I gotta get an oversized lever for this rifle as I was smashing up my middle finger pretty bad.
The .243, and .22-250 were pretty much ran on steel exclusively, and the 4” gong at 392(yes that is a weird distance) was hit far more than it was missed.
My Palma/ FTR rig (M1917) is pretty much my go to for accuracy rig. Sporting a 8-32x Sightrom III with a 1/4moa dot reticle, it’s more or less a dial it at send it interface(at least to 392)
Heres 4 hits on the 4” gong at 392:
(The hits off the square we’re not painted and aren’t from my .308)
Lastly I was quite surprised with the .260. I was mostly fire forming virgin brass with it yesterday, but as the results at 200 & 300 showed decent results, I decided to take it out to 392, and well I’m a bit shocked as to how well things came together. There was a bit of a lateral 60 degree to the right wind, and with no flags I just shot it, as when the poplar fluff looked to be not moving very much.
That’s about 1.75” Center to Center for 5 shots!(0.44MOA)
Some days you are defiantly the windshield!
