Default Snowmoblies

I think this subject was covered quite a while back & I know people have there preferences for one reason or another but I was looking on investing in a skandic 600 ace four stroke with 20 inch track. I heard they are a good work horse machine for the trapper . Just wandering those of you that have them how do you like them .

I had the same problem "TIPPY" that was with a big POLARIS 4 stroke and later with a big YAMAHA 4 stroke....all were sold ...will be looking for a good used machine someday but I'll want to test drive it...

I am not a trapper, but do a lot of back country sledding, but not in the mountains. Hunt wolves, look for moose and caribou antlers, stuff like that. I don't know why more guys aren't getting the Ski-doo Expeditions. They are great two person sled, with 18" wide and 154" long track. Articulating track for easy reverse, and good solid bumpers for pushing through bush. I got the 1200 cc four stroke, with high and low range, and it pushes that sled to 151km/hr. Yes it is still registered on the digital dash as the "fastest speed achieved". That's some fast for a heavy machine, but it doesn't feel like it. It is made for pulling big loads, hence the name, but gets you places with speed and comfort. It has adjustable air ride suspension, and a bunch of other extra's too. Maybe its the near $20,000.00 that is a bit of a hurtle for some.

No one makes 18 inch tracks . Expedition xu are 20 inch and swt is 24. But I agree fantastic machine. I am surprised they can sell the pogo front scandik when the expedition xu are way better! I have a expedition xu 600 two stroke and really like it . Pulls like a clydesdale and can run like a thoroughbred if need be . Very stable!

20000$ for an expedition? Someone saw you coming if that’s the price you paid!

An expedition or Skandic with a 20” track is quite a bit less then 20k. I’ve heard some guys call the skandic tippy. It can be but once you learn to ride it I enjoy how manoeuvrable it is. Could put wider skins on it if you feel the need.

Oh I’m fully aware but that still seems excessively high. Especially when a quick search shows a brand new Expedition LE 900 ACE can be found for 15k Canadian....

https://www.sleddealers.ca/snowmobil...d-and-labrador

At 20k I’d find a used sled from the rental market down south with a couple thousand miles on it and pay less than 1/3 that price, unless you like giving money away. Was just on a SAR with a friend who paid 6200$ for a 2018 summit 850 with 1700 miles on it.

Default Skandik

I can’t speak for the Skandik but my Tundra 600 ace LT is basically the Skandiks little brother and is also tippy, especially with a full tank of gas ( surprisingly it holds 40 litres of fuel), which makes it top heavy. The narrower ski stance makes it very manoeuvrable but you gotta be paying attention all the time, which you should be anyway I suppose. I’m loading it up right away for a shed hunting/ ice fishing trip but I’m gonna run it in the bottom half of the fuel tank which seems to make things easier.

Yes, you are correct, on the 20" track. The sticker price always seems reasonable, and then you start to add the things that make the sled truly usable, and the price rises. Smart gauges, storage tote, bigger wind shield, helmet cords, second seat hand warmers and gaurds, etc. I am refuring to total cost, including GST. I was the first one Riverside has ever sold with a 1200 cc because of the up charge. I go with, you can never have too much power. I'll have this sled for as long as some guys will burn through two lesser machines because they went cheap and then regret it. My dad always said us poor people can't afford to buy cheap stuff and then keep replacing it.

Hey, another interesting thing about the Expedition 1200 is that it gets amazing gas millage. Ive never run it dry, but have hit 170 km's on a tank in good off trail conditions and easily get 100 km with deep powder snow, breaking trail the whole time. My other two, Ski-doo touring models 500 cc two strokes have a hard time getting 100km out of a tank. I do not know the sizes of the tanks though, so that may make up a part of the difference.

I have that exact machine. It has 10,000 km on it. its a 2014 model. The machine has been basically trouble free. It has been my trapping machine and has pulled a toboggan for all of those miles. The machine is tippy as hell. I put the widening kit and ski skins on it to help with the tippiness. It all helped but I think I need to change out the springs in the pogos to something stiffer.

I just use a 600 MXZ Renegade with a reinforced rear bumper to tow my otter sled, wider skis and longer paddles on my track for residential trapping. Lots of on and off the trailer at this time of year. Doubles as a recreation ride.

If you need a work horse you might find something decent on kijiji if you don’t want to buy new.

Skandic 900 Ace super wide track (SWT 24”), at Riverside $14,500.00. Picked up 3 of them for Fort Sask Nordic Ski club. Groom 20km trails. Pull 900lb grooming machine. Run 2 sleds every time we head out.

Other ski clubs purchase them from our club. Replace every 10 years. Always rotating a unit out every 3-4 years (6000 km).

I was chatting to a fella today about tracks on ATV's. I've thought about possibly selling my skidoo and having one multi purpose vehicle......wheels and tracks. What are people's thoughts about the pro's and con's of going that route?

Not a good idea imo. Can cover way more miles 10 times faster on sled.

Dave , thought of going that route myself but they do say its slower & you need a bigger motor due to turning the tracks . How slow is slow ?? . What impressed me was watching the quads with tracks up in the mountains right along with the sleds . Do some looking on U -Tube , that's what got me thinking of multi usage .
