Boyd's Stock - Customs/Duty Assessment

I ordered a rifle stock from Boyd's to convert a Tikka to a smaller length of pull for my boys to shoot.

Arrived with about $23 of customs/duty assessment.

Not a huge deal however as this is manufactured in America I assumed it would be NAFTA exempt.


Wondering if anyone else ordered from them and if customs was assessed?

Did it specifically say 'duty'? There would be tax and then the fee for them to calculate the tax, however, there should be no duty.

Mail or courier? Couriers gouge you on so called Brokerage fee's.

Even when there is no GST due, just for checking! (see DHL).

Just got a Boyd's stock couple weeks ago, right to door no duty no gst.

Canada Post charges $10.00 to collect GST/Duty for Canada Border Services.
I've had US orders with $5.00- $7.00 GST owed, with $10.00 +GST CP processing fee added.

WRONG. There is no duty on a stock made in the US . Couriers charge a ridiculous brokerage fee , usualy 25% of the value of the goods, then Couriers charge GST on the grand total of goods and brokerage fee's.

USPS does not charge anything, it is Canada Post that collects GST and a flat rate brokerage fee of $7.00 { could have gone up a bit since my last package}

There is no need to worry about discussing this on line. It has nothing to do with USPS or the US seller.

Some US stores have a GST # and collect the GST on the invoice , then CP doesn't collect it as it is already paid. You only get hit with duty on goods made outside of NAFTA countries.

Do you mean Air Freight ? Mail is USPS not UPS

If UPS / Fed EX , DHL etc don't charge the fee at the door they will bill you later and refuse to bring other packages until you pay up . Then go thru collections to get their pound of flesh.

Yes, if you pay for more expensive/faster shipping. They cut out the brokerage. They used to anyways... our dollar stinks so I haven’t bought much from the us for a while

It needs to be a real good sale price or just can't get the item any where else than the U.S. to make it worth while with the Dollar rate exchange lately.
I've found if you limit the order to $100.00 Cdn.or so, they usually won't bother collecting GST. My last order from Brownells for Wilson products was about $150.00 Cdn.,Canada Post collected $17.00 ,she said $10.00 of that was processing fee for the GST owed.
If you split the order up so it's two $100.00 orders,instead of a $200.00 order, the extra shipping works out to about the same anyway.
Most US companies ship USPS ,if not I shop elsewhere.

Less then 50% of my us parcels get GST collected. The last parcel that I picked up yesterday was worth over 500 us no GST collected. I find that there is no rhyme or reason to for what gets charged GST. It's a crap shoot

I've noticed that also,I'm not as lucky as you.I think my rate is more like 1 in 4 get through without extra charges.

I have ordered 2 Boyd's stocks, both within the last few months, same method of shipment, same stock ONE HAD DUTY the other DID NOT.

Not sure how they determine what is exempt, what is subject but I'm guessing it's a matter of screening against the harmonised code and how busy the depot is.

No rhyme no reason and certainly no consistency whatsoever.

Actually not true!
In the past I have been charged duty on items manufactured and not manufactured in the US. And more times than not I haven’t been charged duty on items shipped through USPS.

Good thing we have a customs agent among us!! Appreciate your superior input pete!

I think people get confused with DUTY , brokerage fee's , and GST.

In the last year I've had about 6 packages from USA delivered by Canada Post and 2 of them had a " handling fee " also on them. I asked the postal delivery guy and he said more and more packages are having fees added with Canada post also and it is random, not just one comodity and some of this stuff was for guns ( recoil pad, reloading dies etc ) and some wasn't. I think we will be paying more of these ' handling ' fees down the road.

The only item I've rec'd from the US in the last two yrs with duty on it, was on one out of 8 boxes of decoys, that were made in China. The other 7 came thru with just the gst on 4 of them, 3 others got del'd no charge on GST even.
I had a fishing rod from England with duty, and a shipment of decoys from China with duty. That was about 5000.00 of stuff on those three, duty was under 100.00 total.

The orders I get from US. if they come from Toronto never have duty or gst. anything coming through Richmond BC, stung every time and pretty much same kind of items. depends where they ship from

I purchased my Boyds stock at Calgary shooting center.
It was in stock and delivered...no hassle.

I have ordered several items from many different places in the U.S. Including a few stocks from Boyd's. When ordering items under $100 in value, up to approx. 3 years ago I didn't pay any fees, USPS, UPS, DHL etc. In the last 3 yrs it seems I have had to pay fees on all items sent from the U.S. with the exception of 1 rifle stock which was shipped and classified as a Used Stock. It used to be that items shipped via USPS and subsequently Canada post did not incure fees etc, but not the case anymore. Not sure exactly how that works.

Spot on. So is the part about use USPS and never UPS if you can avoid it or make sure it guarantees no further charges like Amazon and Ebay do.

The part that really annoys me is the $10 processing fee Canada Custom;s charges, no matter whether they collet $2.00 or $200 GST on some of those random parcels.
