Default Small Bore Rifle Recommendations

I am looking at purchasing a higher end 22 something like a Anschutz 1903. Not very informed of other guns equal that quality. Could someone make a suggestion from different manufacturer. Looking at maybe getting into some small bore shooting competitions in the future.

Default small bore

I have a couple of Winchester model 52 rifles. I would hold them up against any high end rimfires out there.
The 52 was initially made as a target rifle, but designed like a regular full size bolt action.

Are you palnning to compete?

I never competed on a Provincial or national level with anything BUT Anschutz rifles, and they were by far the the predominant rifle on the line in all three sporting rifle classes of smallbore .
There were also the odd Walther, Remington, BSA, and Winchester rifles however.
At that time , Anschutz popularity was overshadowing the others.
Today there other other brands that will do as well for much cheaper.
There are several good rifles on the market now for the sporting rifle class , CZ being one.
However, if you want to shoot three position match rifle, the Anschutz is still the one too choose.
I have been out of the competitive scene for so long however, I don't even think 100 yards is shot in sanctioned competition, let alone 200 yard plus the any sight matches.

Depends entirely on what kind of competition you are interested in, 50 meter prone, Silhouette, rimfire BR, Biathlon, what level, club, provincial, National international. If you are serious about shooting RF BR then a custom made gun is the only way to be really competitive above the club level. Since you are just starting out I would strongly suggest an Anschutz of the proper configuration for the most likely competition you are to shoot.

Quality ammo is the biggest consideration if you want to be competitive and shooting high end ammo can very quickly exceed the cost of the gun. Eley Tenex goes for $20 a box so 5000 rounds and you have paid for a Anschutz Target gun. There are very few factory guns that would be competitive in most types of competition for anywhere near the price.

Hope this helps. Let us know a little more detail and we can be of more help.

Sorry, never mastered that bit. I'll be happy to send them to an email or text though. You're welcome to post them after that.

I don't plan on shooting anything beyond what our local club offers, if it offers anything at all. Currently looking into it.

Love the Free rife Ken!
I have a Strela Free rifle as well, but it is a monster, a few pounds heavier at least than my 1413 Anschutz Super match!
My older brother used to joke that the Russian weight lifting team used them to work out with!

Some beautiful rifles in this thread! Love 22 talk, it's my favourite caliber and the one I shoot most. I'm a huge fan of CZs and Anschutz but to be totally honest, haven't shot much else in these "classes". For CZs, it's highly unlikely I'll one anything other than 452s, and just added another before Christmas. It has a sporter-weight, 16" threaded barrel...and when the weather starts cooperating, I'll zero the scope on it. I have 2 x Anschutz rifles, an older model 1450 (youth-sized, bad trigger, but it shoots and I love it!) and this little fella, a model 64 MPR "Tactical Trainer". The gun is remarkably accurate, and has the best trigger I've ever used on any gun. It's a bit of a tank, but I bought it as a bench gun...and potential gopher-slayer down the road. The CZs do that job incredibly well, so for now...this rifle gets babied. I can't recommend Anschutz enough, the guys @ Nordic Marksman are incredibly helpful and have provided remarkable customer service too. Can't recommend them enough.

This answered some of my next questions when googling where to purchase a CZ or Anschutz they where to only one that came up, are there other distributors for Anschutz. I managed to find CZ at Cabelas.ca

Prophet River handles both Anschutz and CZ.

Default Small Bores

I have gone thru a lot of .22 Mags looking for the smoothest action, best fit/feel, ease in handling and most of all accuracy - settled on a CZ 455 .22, its a keeper & a looker.

CZ is really hard to beat for the money. Everyone grumbles about the triggers but after a brick or so of shells they are not to bad, not as good as an after market but not bad.

If you CZ will not group an inch or so at 100 yards then it is probably not the rifles fault.

I own several and have never had one not shoot, whether it is a 452 , 453 or a 455. All seem to shoot well.

- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.
