Default Recommendations for bank fishing for kids around Calgary

Afternoon Good People,

My family and I live in Chestermere. I’m getting my girls (age 7 and 5) interested in fishing. The issue is that we can’t catch a thing bank fishing in Lake Chestermere.

So I’m looking for some recommendations to take my girls where they have a better chance of success. The can do hikes, we did Fullerton loop last week, so we can have limited hike in ability.

We need to stay within an hour from Chestermere. And we don’t have access to canoes or boats. It has to be from the bank and wide/safe enough to have them on the bank without risk of fast water or falling in. Kid friendly is the key. But the better the chance of success, the more, I can get the hooked!

Thanks

John

Here's a good first check:

https://www.ab-conservation.com/prog...stocked-lakes/

also glenmore reservoir

pine coulee reservoir too, seen some nice rainbows come off the shores there and nice shore, easy to walk, great for kids.

That should get you started.

edit:

other places to think about:
travers reservoir (bit further)
spray lakes (few fish, imo... but awesome views)

Hit The Kinsman Pond in Strathmore. Its full of trout and totally kid friendly with docks and scenery. Use Valvetta cheese on a pickeral rig and get ready to be busy lol. Went there as a kid when my dad was a teacher at the high school and took all my nephews there

Look at the stocking reports to start. Chain Lakes is good for kids to get small trout or suckers.

Check out Sportsrent in Calgary, rent a row/motor boat of your choice, drive it back to Chesterslough, slap on some minnows on your hooks. Good to go and lots of hammer handle swamp sharks to keep the kids and you busy. Cost of rental may outweigh gas to and from foothills. Alternately, watch Facebook marketplace. Lots of people looking to make a few bucks for using their stuff.
Just my 2 cents.

A 12 or 14 foot tinner can be had for a few hundred bucks, cheaper than most rentals, and oars is all you need to fish Chestemere. It actually has very good Pike fishing all summer long. Kids will have a blast. If that isn't an option check the ACA stocking reports. There are a half a dozen small ponds stocked with Trout within an hour of you. Great shore fishing but early morning and evening will be more productive.

Kids can catch trout pond in calgary, a size 14-18 black and red zebra midge under a bobber will likely catch fish. A few big brood stock trout in there.

Thanks Buckman, I got it from here.

I’m going to give Dean the grace to believe he had rough day/week and he didn’t realize how his remark came off.

It’s ok brother. I ain’t mad.

But if I felt inclined to explain, I’d tell you that I didn’t grow up in Alberta or even Canada. And we don’t have pike in Texas. And if you asked me about it, I’d say that I only really started Canadian fishing more seriously last year as a way to spend time outdoors with my 2 young daughters. Canadian Fishing is a relative new hobby for me.

And now i feel like this topic is done. Any other comments on this can be done through private messages.

I’m hoping to post a pic tomorrow of a kid and a fish.

Thanks again for all the support and information.

John

Thanks for this. Lived in Calgary for 50 years but never spent any time around Glenmore. Always wanted to try it out but unsure as it is pretty big and limited access spots.

To op, please post back on your experience and suggestions after you try it out.

Well, if I had to rely on my fishing prowess, I’d starve.

But we had a good time. We parked at park on the south side of the lake and hiked 1/2 mile west . It was windy and the kids had some trouble casting. We last a 5 of diamonds stuck in some rocks right off the bat. We had fun and will try again soon.

Tomorrow we head to strathmore to try kinsman lake.
